7 out of 10

This is a much maligned book, at least in my experience. When I was reading it people, even strangers, would say things like "Why would you want to read something that glorifies violence against women?" but, I don't think it does at all. Women in abusive relationships never feel as if they can walk out of the situation. O knows she can, but doesn't.

The second half of the book is not as satisfying, thus the 7 rating.

I agree with Zmrzlina, I don't think this book glorifies violence against women besides, it's clear that O consents to it. My problem with the book is that I never really understood her motivation for doing so and for going to such extremes, maybe we're not supposed to..! Interesting read, thank you again for sharing.

Received through the post from marie-therese as part of a swap, I will post out After You'd Gone as soon as possible. Thank you for sending me this book, it was referenced in 'Cutting up Playgirl' by Carrie Jones and intrigued me. Can't wait to read it x

I also did not enjoy the second part of the book and was somewhat disappointed by the lack of the final chapter. Not a book I would usually choose to read but one that I am pleased that I did. Included in the list of 1001 books to read before you die it is extremely engaging, if for its violent tendancies and somehwat taboo subject matter.

I also agree that it does not glorify violence to women but only the women who want to stay in this sort of environment. O has the choice to leave but she always consents and enjoys her situation.
