Ami McKay has written an amazing book in her first foray into fiction. In a voice that is clear and bright, she tells the story of Dora Rare, who soaks up wisdom and folk remedies from midwife, Miss Babineau, sought out by all when trouble arises, yet ostracized by those same neighbors as a witch. As Dora's options dwindle, she realizes that she will accept this same burden and sacred trust as her own. Her entry into midwifery coincides with the arrival of a cold and manipulative obstetrician who pressures the women (and men) of Scots Bay, Nova Scotia to accept the modern maternity home as the only reasonable alternative for women's health care. Dr. Thomas is too practical and egocentric to recognize the core truth: that birthing is more than just a medical procedure. This is a book filled with history, with folk voices and mostly with women's wisdom. It is the book I've been waiting for since The Red Tent, filled with the secrets, passions and sisterhood of women. More, Ami McKay! More, please!

The Birth House was sent to me by a Canadian friend who insisted I MUST read it despite the fact that it was not available locally. Thank you, sassymonkey! This treasure will be lovingly shared with the women of TOC.

Received today at TOC lunch. Will read and return. Thank you!

This was an engaging read. Though not packaged as one, it reads like a historical romance. I was distracted throughout, waiting for the protagonist to become aware of who her true love was and the circumstances that would enable them to get together.

To TOC, 5/3/08.

Note to TOC (Table of Contents: our local group): sorry if I goofed and was supposed to return this to the group. I was looking for a wishlist book to send out and I didn't read the journal entries carefully before I chose this one.

I rec'd it in the mail today as part of Taaza's Happy Day RABCK! You mailed it out so soon! Thank you, I've been wanting to read this book! Since Mount TBR is huge, let's see when I can finally get to it! Thanks again! And don't forget to play when I host the sweepstakes in January!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Added: I don't know who TOC is, but I noticed in the journal entry that they are supposed to get it back, and that you sent it to me instead. I can move this book up on Mount TBR and mail it back to you for TOC to read when I'm done. Do you need me to do that?
Just found out that it's mine to keep! I'll make sure to share it when I'm done!
Well, this just JUMPED to the top of Mount TBR since it was requested by my friend and fellow BookCrosser (Book_Drunkard) during an Autumn Book-Picking activity (instead of apple-picking!) on Facebook.
Will be reading it next for the Reduce Mount TBR challenge (Link), and then sending it off to Indiana!
Oct. 27, 2017: Preparing for a controlled release soon. I really enjoyed this book very much. I love women's history, especially told through fictionalized characters. The old knowledge is valuable.
Received today ... wow, that was fast!
Thank you so much for going "picking' with me and I'm so very happy that I didn't pick a *bad apple*.
Adding to Mt. TBR for now, but, I hope it won't have to wait long until I get the chance to devour it. LOL
