11/18/06: Finished it already. Turns out I had already read it, but it was worth rereading (couldn't remember how it ended!). Good book, but a little frustrating.

Wow, I wasn't expecting that ending. Well worth the read. I passed it around the family and several of my friends. I think I'll save it for a book box. Thanks!

Rosemary Fells invites a strange woman she saw out in the rain home to have a cup of tea where she is introduced to Rosemary's fiancee Philip and her friend Jane.
Eleanor seems to captivate Philip in that short meeting and he seeks her out, they have an affair and then he goes off to war.
This is a example of what can go wrong from just a chance encounter. I enjoyed this story and the surprise ending.
Ready for a new reader

Atmospheric, brooding, dark.......and a peek into the social mores of the early 1900s. It reminds me of Edith Wharton's book, Ethan Frome.
Thanks for the RABCK, lauraloo. And thanks to all the other readers who sent this book on quite a journey.
