From the blurb:

SHE LONGED FOR A PIRATE'S KISSES, FOR A GOLDEN ROGUE'S CARESS...

Every lady of breeding knows: No one has a good time on a pirate ship. No one, that is, but the pirates. Yet there she was. Merr Wilding- kidnapped in terror, taken from a ship bound from New York to England, spirited away in a barrel and swept aboard the infamous Black Joke. There she was, trembling with pleasure in the arms of her achingly handsome, sensationally sensual, golden-haired captor- Devon. From the storm tossed atlantic to the languid waters of the Gulf Stream, from a smuggler's den to a gilded mansion, Merry struggled to escape...to escape the prison of her own reckless passions, the bondage of sweet, bold desire...

7 out of 10

This was a good read and a typical 80's style bodice-ripper romance. I loved the epic feel, the historical detail, the wonderful and large cast of secondary characters- all elements not found in romance novels nowadays. The story went from New York to aboard the pirate ship on the Atlantic, to a mansion in the tropics, to London...I liked that the story took place over a period of months so that the characters got to know each other, and Cat, Raven, and Rand Morgan are all interesting and enigmatic characters I would like to see get their own books (which I understand has not happened and Tom and Sharon Curtis have both retired from writing romance novels).

What I did not like was the naive ingenue of a heroine who can never seem to stand up to the hero, no matter how much abuse he heaps on her. Merry has pluck, I'll give you that, as she tries to escape again and again (I enjoyed those portions of the book the best)...and her character did grow realistic somewhat over the course of the book. But whenever Devon so much as looks at her, she melts into a sputtering puddle at his feet. The lush and evocative prose had me in thrall for a while- especially in the passages dealing with everyday pirate life that actually had me feel as if I were on that pirate ship myself- but it eventually became too much as I just wanted the story to move along.
