Given to me by the publisher, Transita, 22 Sep 2006

A story about a quiet man who comes to the Somerset Levels to write a book, and the monstrous Pamela and less monstrous Vinny, who take him on as a "project".

I loved the descriptions of the wildlife and landscape of the Levels and could have read much more on that. The descriptions of the flood defences and technical details were excellent too. Jonathan was well-researched or -observed; I picked up on what was different about him straight away and the characters were maybe left a little in the dark for too long. But he was treated with respect and seriousness, which was good. I could see no redeeming features in Pamela, except she reminded me of Lucia from Mapp and Lucia - she was indeed a monster but she was the only one, with the other main characters nicely rounded.

A good climax and a satisfying ending.

Will be offered on a BookRing soon

I loved this book and I especially loved the ending!
Great characters, some of whom are horribly like people I've come across on my travels.
It is now winging it's way to Scotsbookie.
Thanks for including me in the ring.

I thoroughly disliked Pamela, she had not one redeeming feature, what a monster. I thought that Jonathan was a well thought out character, I guessed what his 'differentness' was very quickly. The decriptions of the Somerset Levels were beautiful & I enjoyed reading about the flood & sea defences & pumping station. The ending was uplifting & I cheered for Vinny.

Thank you LyzzyBee for the chance to rad this book. I have PM'd Caroline080 & will have it on its travels again asap.

Thanks to AngelChild, we now have a new copy to replace the one that was lost. Go to my bookshelf for the link as I can't put links into JEs at the moment (I know how to, but it does something funny!) I will add the remaining ring members to that ring and post it to LindyLouMac as soon as I can.
