From the back of the book:

Autumn 1940: London is being firebombed, unable to strike back as the Luftwaffe drones overhead. Jack Finlay, a young man notorious for his ability to fight fires, is given the task of preventing five buildings vital to Britain's war effort from being engulfed by the flames.

But resources are scarce and the mood is bleak, and Finlay himself suspicious about the real motive for his mission. And then he falls in love with a woman as unorthadox as he is: a wartime liaison as improbable as it is intense, dangerous because it makes him vulnerable as the flames, and plots, twist around him....

I thought this book was very interesting - especially as I have Fire Fighting ancestors. In fact my Dad told me a very sad story - one of my relatives survived the war and the blitz - then fell from a ladder putting up decorations for the celebrations at the end of the war and died - how tragic.

I am going to pass this book to my husband and father to read as it does give a very good picture of life in London during the 2nd World War.

Brought back memories of World War II in London, the horrors or the blitz and the bravery and perseverance of those in public services at that time, which included my grandfather (a Metropolitan Policeman) and several uncles (Firemen). The book is well researched and well written. I recommend it to those who remember those days and those who should learn about and be aware of them.

oops! Sorry Dad!

I do love book crossing as without it I would never have picked up this book to read. It is a thought provoking story about a chief fire officer in London during the heaviest bombing early I the 2nd world war. It gets across the impact of this combined with the legacy of the 14-18 war on him and the people around him.
Sadly the book has reached the end of its life.
