Amazon Synopsis

At last, a practical, whinge-free guide that tells you how to stop climate chaos. So don't feel bad, feel good. Discover the power of off, find your favourite jumper and spend time in the bath with your friends. Here are 16 steps to get you started. All royalties go to Stop Climate Chaos to make more people count.

BOOK RING: This ring is currently open. Members are as follows (if you wish to join, please PM me and I will add you!):

  • daftmoo (Coventry, West Midlands)
  • tash-d (Coventry, Warwickshire)
  • safrolistics (Coventry, West Midlands)
  • with wyjane (Radford Semele, Warwickshire) since 15 March 2008
  • Katisha50 (Birmingham)
  • Molyneux (Oxford)
  • PurpleElephant (Cambridge)
  • Blaze30 (Lancaster, Lancashire)
  • Tregossip (St Austell, Cornwall)

How it works:
  • If you wish to be added to the list, please PM me with your details.
  • We will kick off once we have 5 members.
  • You will be sending the book to the person who appears after you in the list, so you need to PM them to get their address!
  • It's not a race, but please read and send the book on as speedily as you can, other people are dying to read it too.
  • Please journal the book once you have received it (so we all know where it currently is) and again when you have read it (so we know what you thought of it!)
  • If you're the last person on the list (i.e. we run out of members) the book comes back to me until there are more interested parties...
  • Also, unlike most bookrings, there is a condition attached... Each person should read it (it will take about an hour to read), decide what steps they will take to minimise their personal environmental impact and report back to this thread a month later letting us know what they've done.
  • PM me to let me know if you're interested, and I'll put together a mailing list when I've looked at where everyone is geographically (would like to do hand-to-hand releases wherever possible).

My family already...

  • Turns off appliances and standby switches when we're finished with pretty much anything.
  • Uses (mostly) energy-saving lightbulbs.
  • Recycles all our paper, cardboard, tin cans and glass... and even my chicken carcasses go towards making stock.
  • Buys our electricity from GoodEnergy, supplier of 100% renewable electricity.

My family has now committed to...
  • Buying a new, environmentally (fairly) friendly refrigerator.
  • Replacing every lightbulb in the house with an energy-saving equivalent, as and when each one wears out.
  • Wearing an extra layer before resorting to turning up the heating.
  • Buying locally produced food whenever possible.
  • Minimising the use of plastic bags in and out of the home; recently bought some reusable sandwich wraps from reusablebags.com.

An enjoable little book with some things to think about.
As per the condition:

Me and Phil (MrBigMoo) already:

  • Turn off as many appliances as we can (we don't like the standy button )
  • Use energy saving lighbulbs except the fancy candle ones and the one on the dimmer switch.
  • Recycle paper, card, glass, cans and compostable stuff.
  • Use a water butt to collect water to water the plants
  • Take most holidays in this country or use carbonneutral.com to counter the CO2 for the few where we do fly abroad.

We will try to do better by:
  • Replacing the candle bulbs with low energy ones. These don't appear to be in the usual range of energy saving bulbs but are available at Greenshop.com
  • Buy local food when possible
  • Recycle at work as much as possible
  • Buy energy efficient appliances when the old ones break down

5 out of 10

I love the way this book is written and the graphics but I was disappointed not to find any new ideas. Still, anything that helps spread the word about Climate chaos has to be worth reading.

I will try and:
- see if my landlord will let me change the meter to a more ethical supplier
- introduce more recycling and energy saving at work
- know my facts better so I can annoy people in the pub and continue to harrass my family and colleagues!
- buy more seasonal local food

good luck everyone!

Reader-friendly little book. We already do most of the things suggested - we even have an allotment and a condensing boiler - but it did make me think about increasing, for example, use of the washing line and rechargeable batteries.

I shall also be getting a free energy audit for our church/community rooms.

I'd forgotten all about joining this ring, so it was a nice surprise when I found this on my desk at work!
