One winter's afternoon, Stephen Foster walked into a dog re-homing centre with the intention of picking up a retired greyhound. Instead, he acquired an abandoned lurcher pup.

Whoops, sincere apologies as I appear to have forgotten to journal this when it arrived.
A funny light-hearted book, which was just what I needed after the dark depressing book I had just finished. I had some sympathy with Stephen Foster as we too have one of those pig-headed stubborn creatures, who delights in ignoring my husband until he virtually explodes at which stage she quivers and quakes as if he beats her every day.
Now on it's way to Spike

I started this a day or so ago.

ETA 21/3/07

I've only just realised - through looking through my shelf - that I didnt' do a JE after I'd read this to say what I thought, and as it's a while ago now, I don't remember much other than I did enjoy it on the whole.

This was a nice, short, enjoyable read about a man and his dog. It was amusing but not laugh-out-loud funny and I did admire the author’s persistence in looking after and loving Ollie. Perhaps this book should serve as a warning to anyone tempted by a rescue dog – they might end up with one as dim and nervy as Ollie! Luckily he was beautiful, graceful and loveable as well :-)

Posting on to Jalna as soon as I get an address.

Received safely this morning. (Love the postcard!)

The book I am currently reading is thick and will take me a while, so I will read this in tandem and expect to be passing it on fairly soon. I'm looking forward to reading it, I think I'm really going to enjoy it.

Delia Smith reckons she laughted out loud at this book. I wonder which bits: I certainly didn't find it hilarious, although it was enjoyable. Occasionally it irritated, but on the whole one felt great affection for Ollie and willed him to be happy.

It's only a little book and was very nice light reading in between the heavyweight Bill Bryson I am currently reading and the action-packed Dan Brown to which I am currently listening.

Passing on to Iojima within the next few days.

As a read, it was very enjoyable. As a dog owner who was as ignorant as Foster when I got my first dog, he made me cringe. I was grateful Foster learned *something* about his dog by the end, but I do hope he gets an education before he gets the next one. Maybe he'll train it properly. He and the dog will get along much easier and faster.

Off to MrsPotage.

Thank you IoJima for sending this book which I'm hoping to read fast before continuing the ring. The pic of the dog doesn't look that much like a lurcher!

I wondered if you or anyone else who likes dog books of this ilk might have read Roy Hattersley's book about Buster, which is priceless? Buster, a dog of character who made it into the newspapers courtesy of some prissy journalists and IIRC, a royal goose. Sadly I released my copy some time ago. I'll keep an eye out for another and do a ring if I find it...
Lovely postcard (one of my favourite of his paintings) :-) esp this time of year! Have always meant to try to do a copy of it... thanks

I'm so sorry... Ollie was found in a moving house box... I thought I had send him on months ago... my profound apologies

he is winging his delightful way back to tontowilliams and making little lovely doggy hnoises. i loved ollie, there was so much of him in other dogs of my acquaintance, and so much to love.

Thank you for the ring, tonto :-)
