All the makings of a romance, but none of the fun. I don't think I would have been missing much had I never read it. Hints of Aquin's Next Episode.

Finally finished!! Sorry for the delay. It is a small book, but it dragged for me.

I thought the writing was beautiful, but the storyline was not worthy of the writing. She certainly has a wonderful poetic edge, I just didn't care about the characters at all.

I am glad I had the chance to read it...thanks so much for sharing, Ibis3. :)

It will be mailed early next week.

Hoping the third time is a charm. My laptop just died as I tried to write this journal entry the first two times, so it's back to my trusty p.c.

I really enjoyed reading this one. What it lacks in storyline makes up in the poetic prose writing style; I found myself just wanting to keep on reading. There is the contrast between two cultures for the two lovers, Marianne the sophisticted, world traveler, Canadian and Marco the small village Italian who's whole world is his home village. Then too, there is the stereotypical Italian Mama who holds a tight reigns on her son. All in all it was a good read.

Thanks ibis3 for another great CanLit book.

Mailed 1 May 2007 to molekilby in Wales.

Read whilst travelling to and from the BCUK UnConvention in Brighton.

It took me a while to get into the book, but re-reading the back cover seemed to put everything into place. The author seemed to show different scenes in Marianne's life, how she changed her attitude, trying to fit in. I think it also showed that a relationship, warts and all, cannot be built on a holiday romance.

I'm interested to read Ibis' comments on comparing this to The Next Episode. I agree to some extent and I seem to remember that was translated from French to English also. Is this the reason?

Not my usual fare, but chosen as it allows me tick off 'Q' in my 2007 Author A-Z Challenge, for which I am very grateful. This has led me to read many different genres(?) of books. Will pass on as soon as I have an address.

My goodness, I just wanted Marianne to get on with her life!! I liked the writing, though the first section was a bit of a challenge - but I thought Marco was a drip and that Marianne could have better spent her time in Italy drinking wine instead of waiting for him. Just my $0.02 of course, but I was annoyed. I also really really didn't like all the italics - I'm in my 30's, but found them to be headache-inducing - I think the publisher could have used a different font for the letters.

I appreciated the read, though, Ibis - always interesting to see what's nominated for awards and then try and figure out the reasoning behind the nomination. Whenever you're ready, I will complete the Circle and send this book home. :)
