A community devoured by greed, cowardice and fear. A man persecuted by the ghosts of his painful past. A young woman searching for happiness. In one eventful week, each of them will face questions of life, death and power, and each of them will have to choose their own path. Will they choose good or evil?

The remote village of VIscos is the setting for this extraordinary struggle. A stranger arrives, carrying with him a backpack containing a notebook and eleven gold bars, He comes searching for the answer to a question that torments him: are human beings, in essence, good or evil? In welcoming the mysterious foreigner, the whole village becomes an accomplice to his sophisticated plot, which will forever mark their lives.

I'm not quite sure what I thought of this book. It's ok, but for a book that tries to be philosophical it seems a bit too simple?! I have only read one book of Coelho before, but I liked that one better. Well, this book will now continue its journey!

As I've written a while ago about "The Zahir", as brilliant as "The Alchemist" and "Veronika Decides to Die" are, I have always found the others books I've read by Coehlo disappointing. They always seem to repeat the same "philosophy" over and over. I've tried reading a few pages of this book and had that impression again, and I didn't feel like reading further on.

Hopefully its next reader will enjoy it more.

Reserved for RustyReader2.

Well thanks so much aunt-sophie for brining me this book. It is on my wishlist because it is part "1001 Books to Read Before You Die", so I have challenged myself to read all (or as many as I can find) off that list.

I will get this started as soon as I can!
