This is the first adult novel by an author who has written two well-received YA books. Livvy Dunne is a thoughtful 24-year-old with yearnings toward archeology, who in a rash moment in WWII Colorado becomes pregnant by a dashing officer and is forced into a marriage of convenience by her sternly puritanical minister father. She goes off to Ray Singleton's remote farm knowing nothing about him except that he is lonely, utterly inexperienced around women and touchingly devoted to her. The relationship between the two, graced by some delicate, perceptive and fine-boned writing, is at the heart of the book, and Creel gets it all just right. She is also skilled at evoking the peculiar remoteness from the war of the high plains country, where farmers were regarded as an integral part of the war effort and even got enough gas to drive around for pleasure, a rare privilege in 1944. Lonesome Livvy yearns for more communicative companionship, however, and grows close to a pair of charming Nisei sisters at an internment camp and this is where plot devices begin to play an unwarranted role. For Rose and Lorelei, it turns out, will do anything for love and involve Livvy in what develops into a dangerous (and inherently improbable) exercise in deceit and manipulation. The book recovers its stride for a poignant if rather hasty finish, but the calm spell cast by the tale of Livvy and Ray, which would have been perfectly satisfactory to maintain the book, has been broken.

what a wonderful touching story. This book is so easy to read, it is hard to explain, it's just the writing is so smooth & beautiful, reading it is a pleasure.
I love the title, cover art, and description of this book.
Looking forward to reading it.
Thanks so much, khillz28!

Arrived safe and sound today. I saw a bit of the movie on tv and added this book to my wishlist. Thank you!
A beautiful story. Loved the writing style. Different from the movie. Funny how they always feel the need to change things and characters.
My favorite quote from the book "In one fleeting moment, I stripped away the petals of my future, let them catch wind, and fly away."

update:
Great read, thanks for sharing with me.
I'm going to share this book as a "Ray it Forward." I borrowed the idea from crrcookie as well as her explanation of this type of ray.
Let me try and explain what a "Ray It Forward" is. More or less it is the lazy way for me to set up a common BookRay. Ordinarily a BookRay has a list of participants and it gets mailed down the line to the last person who does whatever they wish with the book. Well, I have no desire to maintain a list so this is what I figure. I’ll find the first person that wants this book and send it to them. I just ask that they pass the book along "BookRay" fashion when they are done with it.
If you are in possession of this book then please look for another BookCrosser to pass it to. Check the wish lists, the forums, a yahoo group, the BookRelay, or offer it at a meeting …whatever way you choose to pass it on is up to you. If it seems that no other BookCrossers want it then send it along its way as a wild release but this should be a last resort.
What are the advantages of Ray it Forward?
Time frame – I ask that you pass the book along in a couple months or so but because there is not a "waiting list" the time is a little more relaxed than a standard BookRay.
Shipping Preferences – Choose your own. If you need to post within your own country then do so. If you choose to send international that is great too. If postal costs are a problem right now then hand it to another BookCrosser at a meeting, release to an OBCZ, ask for postage from the receiver or find some other way to get the book in the hands of another BookCrosser.
***Please note that it would be polite to let the next person know that this is a Ray It Forward book before you pass it along to them so that they will know that they will be expected to pass it on in a couple months.
Less Stress – Please do your best to keep this book moving but I am going to try my hardest not to worry about it anymore as I send it into the world to be enjoyed by as many as is its fate.

This book has safely arrived back in the US - looking forward to reading it - thanks for sending it nikel27! :D
I really enjoyed this story - I thought it was well-written and I did like the twist towards the end (although like khillz I did think it was somewhat unlikely to really occur exactly that way). Thanks for sharing this book!
I have been enjoying stories that have an element regarding the US/Canadian Japanese internment during World War II lately (this is the 3rd I've read) and so has a special person that I know, so I'll be sending this on to her soon :=D

I've learned a lot about WWII internment camps over the past year, thanks to bookcrossing! And thanks to dancing-dog, for the opportunity to learn a bit more through this book.
By the way, lauraloo29, that is one of the prettiest BCID labels I've seen!

This book arrived in my mailbox today - how exciting! It has been sooooooo long since I've had a bookcrossing book show up in the mail :)
Thanks for sending this out to me bookpatch! It was very nice of you!
I will do my best to read this and find a new reader to send it to, though it may take me longer than a couple of months. My reading time is at a premium right now due to working two jobs, but I will definitely "ray it forward" once I've read it. I will update again after I have finished reading.
Thanks again!

What a beautiful book! I feel guilty that I left this sitting on my bookshelf for 4 years and once I had picked it up was able to read it in a little over a day..... Yet - I just wasn't drawn to read it until my hand picked it off the shelf yesterday.
Very poetic, yet easy flowing prose and a lovely story about choices and consequences. Bittersweet, but not depressing.
I will definitely be passing this along to another bookcrosser at our June Bookcrossing meeting.

I gave this book to my good friend, rureading - I think she will like it :)
I'm looking forward to this book from Minerva101 - she reads good stuff. :)
A compelling story that kept me reading until I finished. I enjoyed the budding relationship between Olivia and Ray but for me, the story's flow was disrupted by the author continuously adding historical information into the story.
Took the book to the Calgary BC Meetup today.
Picked up at the October meeting.
This was a poignant story of friendship, trust, love and betrayal set against the backdrop of world war two and the Japanese internment. A beautiful exploration of the loneliness of the prairie farm wife as well.
Taking to the November meetup.
To the finder:
Calgary has an active group of BookCrossers that meet to swap books and discuss book crossing every second Saturday of the month at 11am at Cravings Market on Fairmount Drive SE. We always love to meet new crossers, so please join us any time you like!

Loved this book and Livvy - I could feel her struggle between her dreams and reality. What a great insight into war time America. Passing it along to the next person on the list.
Picked this up at the September meet-up of Calgary BookCrossers.
Like all the others before me, I love this book. The story and relationships unfolded beautifully.
My only bone to pick is that the publisher chose to put a spoiler in the back cover description! That drives me crazy, while I "wait for the other shoe to drop"!

Released at the December meet-up of Calgary BookCrossers at Cravings Market Restaurant.
I went to the December meeting at Cravings and came home with TWENTY BOOKS!!! Now for the reading of them, plus the many on my pile.
This was a meandering story that slowly caught you up in the story of Olivia and how she ended up in an arranged marriage to a shy farmer and how she was changed by the war and the people she met. It was a good read - lots of character development with interesting side stories.
Taking to the November meetup at Cravings Restaurant.
Taking this back to the December meetup of Book Crossing at Cravings.
Picked this up at the December BookCrossing meeting.
This was a lovely book to read. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and the growing relationships.
Taking this to the August meeting to be enjoyed by the next reader.
Just picked this book up at our August meeting at Cravings.
This is a book about a girl who got pregnant with a man she thought loved her and left her. Consequently her father sent her away to be married to a man she never knew. I really like the man she married and he proved to be a very hard working and gentle man. She was not impressed, but the story has a very good ending and it was a very enjoyable read.
