I received this book in mid 2006 from my mom who gave me a big box of books she no longer wanted. This book once belonged to my grandmother, Betty Piper, the one who started the reading bug in our family! I began reading this book last night and am about half way through. I am reserving it for my 200 Pages or Less Bookbox.

I finished this book just now and was a little disappointed. I guess there just wasn't enough action/suspense/storyline to really hold my interest. I felt the ending was really anticlimactic. There are two seperate short stories at the end of the book but so much of the first story was jumbled and weird that it took me several pages into the THIRD story to realize that they weren't supposed to be an extension of Fahrenheit 451!! The concept of the idea is interesting--but there are several characters that I think could have been developed, Clarisse especially.

I read this in Jr. High and enjoyed it and have been wanting to reread it.

Thanks for including this in the Banned Books box.

When I first read this (MANY years ago), I think it was my first introduction to the dystopian genre. I enjoyed it a lot.

When I reread it, I still enjoyed it, but it wasn't as good as I remembered it being. The ending was just weak.

If you like this genre, I recommend A Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood or 1984 or Animal Farm by Orwell.

I'll hang on to this one for the Well-Traveled Books Bookbox.

Thanks for sharing.

I think this one went out with my Top 100 bookbox, and I just noticed that I forgot to change the status to traveling.

OK! I'm a liar! I didn't send this out in a box, my boyfriend is borrowing it. In fact, it's in Fayetteville, AR with him right now. He's a little over half-way through it and once he finishes, it'll be on the move again.

Thank you serendipity! I was just thinking about this book a couple months ago and feeling bummed that I'd not kept it on my permanent collection shelf. (Ok, SHELVES) Not only is it one I am interested in reading again, but my grandmother wrote her name in it...it's one of the few of hers that I have left since I got so super-duper excited about releasing when I first started and got rid of most of them. Anyway, THANK YOU jenptcfan---I will reread and then likely shelve.

3-14-2012 ETA: I forgot to add my JE!!

This was my second time around reading this book. The first time around, I thought it was sort of dumb and anticlimactic…I wasn’t impressed! This time around (6 years later) I think I’m a little older, wiser, mature, able to make the parallels between what went on in the story and what is going on today.

I think it’s ironic that this book was on the Banned Books list! I also think that this story really drives home the point that we can be tolerant to the point of intolerance. It reminds me of the thoughts, “I believe in intolerance---except toward those I can’t tolerate.” Ha!

I thought it was neat to read about some of Bradbury’s ideas for future things that are very close to the reality we experience today. For instance, Montag’s wife spent a lot of time in the virtual reality of her “TV room” with her virtual “family”. That is very close to what we see today with so many homemakers, including myself, spending so much time on Facebook and other online communities---at the expense of the real life going on within her own home.
Some of Bradbury’s “inventions” were spot-on; like his bank that had robotic tellers working 24/7---that’s an ATM!
