Journal Entry 2 by goatgrrl from New Westminster, British Columbia Canada on Friday, December 08, 2006
If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things tells the story of one day on a residential street in an unnamed English city -- maybe East London. From the beginning of the novel you learn something disturbing happened on that day, but not what it was, nor which of the book's unnamed characters have been directly affected. But this is not a tale of suspence. As the story unfolds the daily activities of the street's residents are described, and you become less concerned with the details of the specific event and more captivated by the broad canvas of everyday existence. If plot is your thing, better leave this book on the shelf. But if you think you might be drawn to poetic writing which reminds you to shut up, already, and take a look at what's happening all around you, this is a beautiful novel. You can read a 2002 article about Jon McGregor in the Guardian here, and another review -- also in the Guardian -- here.
