A California Camelot created by a raffish band of ne'er-do-wells and dreamers

Above the town of Monterey on the California coast lies the shabby district of Tortilla Flat, inhabited by a colorful gang whose revels recall the exploits of King Arthur's knights. Soft-hearted, unquestioningly loyal to one another, and in complete disregard of social conventions and expectations, the gutsy denizens of Tortilla Flat cheerfully reside in a world of idyllic poverty.

"The extraordinary humors of these curiously childlike natives are presented with a masterly touch."

— William Rose Benét

This book was a surprisingly good read. The book is on my "literature, arts and medicine" reading list, and I'm trying to work through all those titles. I wasn't sure I would enjoy this, but really, these crazy guys were quite refreshing to me. I think it was the way they lived only in that moment that captured my imagination. Although, per the ending, that kind of existence is not for everyone, and would not be for me either should I actually attempt to adapt that lifestyle. I'm glad I had the opportunity to read this!

I've just begun to reread/read Steinbeck after last reading Grapes of Wrath and Travels w/Charlie 35 years ago. Tortilla Flat was a real surprise. The characters are well drawn and the scene is a precious chronicle of a way of life that gets little sympathy is today's material driven world.
