Picked up at the Tolworth Recreation Centre. It's on the list of 1001 Books to read before you die - I'll add it to the pile!
James captures the sordid world of Maisie's parents (and their many lovers) and presents it to us as Maisie sees it herself. It's a clever trick - while Maisie's innocence protects her, the more worldly reader (er... me ;-) is shown indirectly just how sordid and depraved her parents are. Divorce and clandestine affairs are not so shocking now as they were 100 years ago, but Maisie's neglect by her parents is shocking. I think Jame's depiction of Maisie's innocence and vulnerability are very well done. The adults continually overestimate what Maisie 'knows' and the way they interpret her innocent responses and parroting of what others have said is particularly striking. This is not a happy book - it's hard and shiny and has lots of edges and I don't have that emotional connection to make me *love* it. But, intellectually, I really admire it.
I'll be placing 'What Maisie Knew' into catrionamooore's 'Don't Judge a Book-box' (http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/3372452), which arrived yesterday and has (unsurprisingly) landed me with MORE BOOKS TO READ!!

Oh dear, I find Henry James really exhausting, all those endless sentences. Plus I have already read this one. It was a set text for part of my OU degree.
I'll look around for a good home for it
