An excellent book!
I am now passing it along in a book box

I've really been wanting to read this one...thank you!
I finished this this morning. In my opinion there are four kinds of books:
1. The one you know you'll never read so you don't bother to pick it up
2. The one that you thought you'd read so you started it and just can't seem to finish it
3. A good book
4. An exceptionally well-written story that you seem to lose yourself in
Number 4 definitely describes this book! The easy-to-read way that this book was written had me absolutely convinced that the story was true. It wasn't until finishing it this morning and reading the author's notes that I realized it was just a wonderfully written piece of pure fiction! (Feeling a little disappointed now!) It's been a really long time since I have enjoyed a book so much. Thank you for the opportunity to read it. I have reserved it for rootmartin's book box about developing countries.

And here it is :)
I finally took some time to read it :)
I absolutely loved this book. I was really looking forward to read it, but I must confess I was trying not to have huge expectations towards it. I'm not very picky about the books I read, but you don't get one about geisha very often; it's not a common theme, so I didn't know what to expect and was afraid it would become boring as I read it.
Fortunately, the opposite happened. I found myself getting more and more involved in the plot with each page I read. The story is just beautiful, and I became fascinated with the subject of geisha and all the traditions and mystery that surrounds them. I learned a lot with this book, and now I can't wait to watch the movie and see how Sayuri's life was portrait on screen.
I'll send it along to ApoloniaX as part of the European Christmas Sweepstake. I saw on you profile that you were fond of Asian literature; this doesn't entirely fit that category, but at least it's about Japanese culture and geisha. I hope you'll like it!

Unputdownable, quite a pageturner.
Looking forward to read Mineko Iwasaki's book, which is on my Mt.TBR...
What I found on Wikipedia:
"After the Japanese edition of Memoirs of a Geisha was published, Arthur Golden was sued for breach of contract and defamation of character by Iwasaki. The plaintiff claimed that Golden had agreed to protect her anonymity, if she told him about her life as a geisha due to the traditional code of silence about their clients. Iwasaki sued Golden for breach of contract and defamation of character in 2001. The lawsuit was settled out of court in February 2003."

Duurde 'n tijd voor 't me ging boeien. Heel anders dan de boeken die ik normaal lees. Als ik 't uit heb ga ik 'm zeker doorgeven.
