Journal Entry 1 by hobbit from Surabaya, Jawa Timur Indonesia on Saturday, October 07, 2006
The town of Rio Fugitivo is on the verge of a social revolution - not a revolution of strikes and street riots but a war waged electonically, in which computer viruses are the weapons and hackers the revolutionaries. In this war of information, the lives of a variety of characters become entangled and converge to create an edgy, fast-paced story about personal responsibility and complicity in a world defined by the ever-increasing gulfs between the global and the local, government and society, the virtual and the real. The author, Edmundo Paz Soldan, is from Bolivia and with this book, he won the 2002 Bolivian National Book Award. This is a hardcover edition.

I enjoyed this book. It's very real-world - filled with computer hackers, cryptanalysts, a Latin American dictator who returns to power as a democratically elected President, intrigue, relationships, aging, street riots, trust, and distrust, all wrapped up to create an interesting story.

Wow! This was really a real world -book, it was fascinating to read about the world with computers and all that. It still had the South American taste in it which made the book more interesting. Thank you for sharing this treasure!

I've had this book for far too long and still I haven't gotten around to reading it. I originally requested it for the geographical challenge, but have since read another book set in Bolivia and therefore don't "need" to read it anymore :) And, since I've found someone else who's interested in the book, I'm going to pass it on to her. Happy reading, CandyDarling!
