Synopsis:
The novel's perspective ricochets among all members of the Melrose family - the family featured in St. Aubyn's praised trilogy, "Some Hope" - starting with Robert, who provides an exceptionally droll and compelling account of being born; to Patrick, a hilariously churlish husband who has been sexually abandoned by his wife in favour of his sons; to Mary, who's consumed by her children and an overwhelming desire not to repeat the mistakes of her own mother. All the while, St. Aubyn examines the web of false promises that entangle this once-illustrious family whose last vestige of wealth - an old house in the south of France - is about to be donated by Patrick's mother to a New Age foundation. An up-to-the-minute dissection of the mores of child-rearing, marriage, adultery, and assisted suicide, "Mother's Milk" showcases Edward St. Aubyn's luminous and acidic prose - and his masterful ability to combine the most excruciating emotional pain with the driest comedy. Absorb "Mother's Milk" into your and bloodstream and postnatal depression will never seem the same again... "A masterpiece. Edward St. Aubyn is a writer of immense gifts. His wit, his profound intelligence and his exquisite control of a story that rapidly descends to the lower depths before somehow painfully rising again - all go to distinguish the trilogy as fiction of a truly rare and extraordinary quality" - Patrick McGrath on "Some Hope".
25.11.06: Mein Kommentar

just received today, looks pretty (erotically?!) - thanks.
book review (March 10, 2007):
a novel full of dry wit and biting satire! polpulated with characters from a once-priveliged family, now in-decline: Patrick Melrose, a cynical alcohol-addicted attorney in his early forties; his wife Mary having over-exaggerated affections to their two precocious sons Robert and Thomas; and the two mothers to Patrick and Mary, Eleanor and Kettle.
"Mother´s Milk" reveals a lot about dysfunctional families (especially inter-generational relationships), containing also some other smaller things to think about: neglectance, adultery, assisted suicide, the institutionalization of old people.
An interesting read, short, but still covering a lot, both humorous and thought-evoking.

heute angekommen, dankeschoen!
finished this yeasterday, didnt take me long at all!
I'm not sure what i think of it. The language is beautiful and unusual without being annoyingly clever, especially in the parts narrated by the children. The childrens viewpoints made me laugh a few times. what sort of put me off is the viewpoint of Patrick (the father). these sections reminded me quite a lot of Michel Houllebeqs Atomised, where the characters are incredibly intelligent and understand exactly what is happening to them, yet are unable to change. Its quite easy to get sucked into this depression, but I just don't think its true, we can change the patterns of our family relationships and maybe that is what the ending hints at.
