A very interesting and entertaining tale of the dating life and contemplating motherhood, without a father in the picture.

Journal Entry 3 by mellion108 from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan USA on Tuesday, July 15, 2003
I am the fortunate recipient of this book. Although it's not typically my style of reading, I've already gone through 30 pages just sitting here downloading some things for my new computer. So, it looks like this is my current read! I'll read this and pass it along as an RABCK or in a ray. Thanks! From dust jacket flap: With the laugh-out-loud humor and heartfelt wisdom that made Animal Husbandry a national bestseller, Laura Zigman's second novel introduces Ellen Franck, a successful single career woman whose one desire--a child of her own--throws her into the ever-growing ranks of the "reproductively challenged." Ellen has a life many people dream about--a glamorous fashion industry job, an apartment in Greewich Village, good friends--and yet Ellen feels herself at sixes and sevens, filled with a vague longing for...what? She can't say. Then the sight of her newborn niece, Nicole (a.k.a. "The Pickle"), makes her realize exactly what she's been missing: a child. But there's one problem. Malcolm, the man she loves, is too scarred by the long-ago death of his young son to ever consider fatherhood again. Looking down the barrel of the dark side of thirty-five, Ellen knows that time is passing, and as it does, her desire to have a baby only increases--especially when her sister Lynn announces she's pregnant with her second child. Now Ellen must finally address the very real flaws in her relationship with Malcolm and examine her doubts and fears about the only option that seems to be available--single motherhood. And so begins nine month sof reading, Internet surfing, and nonstop Zigmanesque observations about mrning sickness, stretch marks, accelerated hair gowth, digestion, amniocentesis (and that's just the beginning). And Ellen...well, Ellen finally makes a clear-eyed decision that will change her life.

Journal Entry 4 by mellion108 from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan USA on Wednesday, July 16, 2003
Well, I never intended to read any of this book, let alone to read all of it! However, I managed to zip through this in a few hours tonight. I've found myself reading more and more "chick lit" lately, and most of what I've read has been quite good. This one isn't bad, but I didn't relate in any way, shape, or form to the main character, Ellen. She's "staring at the dark side of 35" and so am I, but that's about the only thing in common. She seriously wants to be a mommy, and she works for one of the top designers in the world. Nope, neither of those things comes close to my own life! However, this is a relatively enjoyable read. It's not great literature, but I think it's probably perfect for a warm afternoon spent lounging in the sun (or the air conditioning!).
