The Amateur Marriage: A Novel

This was a well-written book offering rich character development and an engaging family saga spanning multiple generations. You find yourself wanting to know what happens to the characters and the story arc concerning the runaway teenage daughter, which, thankfully, isn't tied up with a pretty bow. The story is realistic and identifiable by most readers, although I failed to see just where the humor was supposed to be that many back-cover reviewers mentioned. I often found the story to be more melancholy than amusing, but I also did not in any way find that a detraction.

I just loved this book. I didn't have to wait for the story to "get started", it just moved right along from the first page. It was fun to move through the decades and read the references to the different trends for each. There is probably something in this book that relates to everyone's family in one way or another. I hated for it to end.
