Journal Entry 4 by Alvhyttan from Nora, Västmanland Sweden on Friday, January 26, 2007
It's here! :) Every day this week I have been wondering if this book should be in my mail, I guess it took more than the usual six to eight weeks because of the holidays. Well - today it arrived and I am happy because I am really looking forward to read this book. I am reading several other books at the moment, but don’t have many pages left in two of those books, so I will start reading this book in just a few days. Thanks debnance for sending this book out on a worldwide bookray! :)

Journal Entry 5 by Alvhyttan from Nora, Västmanland Sweden on Saturday, February 24, 2007
Just a little note to say that I love this book, I have about 100 pages to go, but have almost no time at all to read just now because I am taking care of my sick mother. My mother is going to stay at a nursing home for two weeks from the 27th of February, so during those two weeks I will be able to read. And I will be able to finish this book and send it on one of the first days in March. I hope this is okay!? (Well I do read for my mother, but she doesn’t understand English so I have to read Swedish books for her.)

Journal Entry 6 by Alvhyttan from Nora, Västmanland Sweden on Friday, March 02, 2007
I love this book!!! It is a great novel about India and its people, from around the time of the independence 1947 and to the year of 1984, but most of the novel is set during the Emergency 1975-1977. The author is very critical to the Indian regime during those Emergency years. It is beautifully written, with many interesting characters from different parts of the Indian society and the author tells the most amazing stories about those people. The book is very emotional and it is far from a “feel good” book, yet it isn’t a book without hope. For me this book is about caring for the situation in the world, about caring for other people and about how people in difficult situations try to maintain a fine balance in life. Even if I heard a lot about and know some of the history of India, I got very taken by this story and had to discuss some of the things I read with my husband (he has visited India and know much more about this country than I do). I’m so glad I got the chance to read this wonderful book, thank you so very much debnance! Now I am looking forward to read “Family Matters”, I have that book in Swedish and I hope it is an other good story by this author. I will send this book to samulli tomorrow.

Journal Entry 8 by samulli from Weimar, Thüringen Germany on Saturday, March 10, 2007
I am very sorry, I just can't get into this book. It feels like I have been reading it for ages, although it can have been only a few days. I'm about halfway through and it's just depressing me no end. Maybe it's just my current mood or something, but I don't think I can finish it. It's not a badly written book, on the contrary - although I have to say I am not a fan of the descriptions of all the people's lifes in dickensian detail. But the story itself is no doubt a good one. I just can't bring myself to care for it at the moment. I will contact chas04 right away and send the book on as soon as possible.

Well that was quite depressing, although well written. The more bad things that happen to Om and his uncle, the more they fight back. I loved the character of Dina and her independence and I was really fighting their corners! I also loved the ways the characters in the story were so entwined, despite living in such a big city. I can't say much more for fear of spoiling the book for others but I wasn't happy with the ending! Have contacted CaterinaAnna for her address.

Arrived in school yesterday - the one day this half term when I wasn't there! However, was kept safely for me, so it has now made it home to Mount Toobie. It is number 4 at the moment, so should be done by mid- May.

Journal Entry 14 by Caterinaanna from Coventry, West Midlands United Kingdom on Wednesday, May 16, 2007
Well I'm in the 'enjoyed this book' camp. I really felt like I got to know the characters and to care about them. There was only one part of the ending that jarred and didn't feel quite right. (Spoiler in white, highlight to read) I didn't think that our young friend would have given in that easily - it was almost like he was doing what he did for the sake of the other two who were happier than he realised Apart from that I think the ending was strong because it was credible for the situation and the characters, whereas a lesser author might have made things different ... Going to see a stage version tonight - will update JE after, if I remember!
