Woo-hoo! The post-man woke me up knocking to deliver this first thing this morning, thanks so much for passing it on to me, Sage.

I've managed to pique my sister's interest in this book since I first heard about it, so I'll pass it along to her first as soon as I've read it...she's a BC'er without any books registered yet (she succumbed to a little light sibling-pressure and signed up), so I'm hoping the fact that this book has come so far will finally spur her into action!

Thanks again, I will of course journal again when I've read it. :O)

Update 26/6/03

It took me a while to get around to reading this one, mainly because I was prepared for a dark, gritty book...and I had been warned that the first chapter in particular made for very difficult and distressing reading. In the meantime I read Alice Sebold's autobiography, 'Lucky'.

This book bares very little resemblance to 'Lucky', an extremely harrowing account of Alice Sebold's life after rape, and concentrates far more on echoing the fall-out of the central character Susie's family and friends as she watches over them from 'the Inbetween', her personally constructed Heaven.

It's more a story about coping than anything else, and I'm sorry I put off reading it for so long...Susie's thoughts and feelings as she watches over her family and friends from the Inbetween, her sadness as her younger brother and sister grow older than she was when she was murdered, and the vicarious delight she takes at experiencing life through them are enlightening, sympathetic and calming, rather than the upsetting hard-to-read story I had pre-judged it to be.

Highly recommended.

LOL...too funny not to mention it here... PenelopePitstop PMed me only minutes after I wrote my journal entry ... she saw the book on my bookshelf and asked to read it, so it will be a pleasure for me to send it over to Italy - it's such a good quality book, hardback and all. It will take only a few days... I hope!!

This was a real surprise to me! Just like with Lucycat, I expected something more gruesome and dark, but was positively impressed by the easiness with which the author manages to bring up to paper what is a very upsetting story.
The idea of those who passed away that still look upon us and follow our life on earth while being hosted in Paradise (a very peculiar interpretation of heaven, which makes sense to me, though!) is comforting for most of us... after reading this book, I caught myself wondering... ever felt a presence around you?
I can only recommend to read this book and pass it on... it is well worth reading!

This book was promised to PenelopePitstop in July, and it will be on its way to Italy soon.

Very beautiful (sigh), really moving (sigh), expecially in the final chapters (sigh) and in its final words (double sigh).
Its beginning is quite gruesome, with the description on how the child dies, then the story goes on telling how her family and friends cope with it.
Those who expect a thriller won't be disappointed. Neither will those who like good books well written (though I admit I sometimes found it difficult to read on).
Thanks to whoever didn't like it and left it for us to find and to those who passed it along to us.

ciao

Legs

I'll pass it along to Vesna next monday :o)

I expected more from this book. I am not really sure abt what I am going to get from it, but I just finished it last night and I might
need to ponder a bit more on the story and its message.
Easy to read, a good mix of thriller, romance, sadness, a bit of everything.
I'll pass it along to Campalla as soon as I get her address.

I expected a thriller, with a bit of supernatural...

Instead, I found a good novel, full of deep feelings, quite sad.

I'll pass it to Theut as soon as possible.

What did I like about this book?
First of all, Susie has a true and believable omniscient point of view. Because she cares, all of the characters are explored equally and their motivations, reactions and actions are clearly and evenly relayed. She is not sad, angry, or bitter. Instead she is a mix of curiosity and hope about the people still on Earth. Her real regret is not for herself; it is for the members of her family and friends who are left to sort out her death.
Susie narrates by mixing in events about things that happened before she died so that we can see how the family was when she was still there; and at the same time, she keeps the day to day, year to year events moving along, so that we can see the progress the family makes in accepting her death.
What else? In my opinion it's a really sad book (I cried) but I liked it so much!

I'll pass it to nuela tomorrow : )

I'm quite amazed that this bookring came back and didn't get lost like so many others...:-D
Now it will leave again and travel to Amsterdam to a very special friend and her lovely family.
