A Charity Shop find. (They have a "better class" of second hand books in Durham!! And higher prices too!!) But this a highly sought after. Can't decide what I am going to do with this one but Suedo also has stated an interest.!!

I have decided to send this out on a Bookray. Where possible I want it to be hand delivered between people "that you will meet on earth". It will be fun to see how little is spent on postage of this book! If you are interested please PM me.

So far in a rough sort of order!;
(The order will change if people can hand deliver the book rather than post it)

Eddie is a wounded war veteran, an old man who has lived, in his mind, an uninspired life. His job is fixing rides at a seaside amusement park. On his 83rd birthday, a tragic accident kills him as he tries to save a little girl from a falling cart. He awakes in the afterlife, where he learns that heaven is not a destination. It's a place where your life is explained to you by five people, some of whom you knew, others who may have been strangers. One by one, from childhood to soldier to old age, Eddie's five people revisit their connections to him on earth, illuminating the mysteries of his "meaningless" life, and revealing the haunting secret behind the eternal question: "Why was I here?"

A quick, pleasent read. Maybe I enjoyed this because I was in the right place, but I found it comforting to think of this concept on heaven; where you meet the 5 people who help you to make sense of your life!

Passing it on to another bookcrosser to read and pass on.

Taking it to the Newcastle meet up for Holystone

Journal Entry 8 by suedo from Redditch, Worcestershire United Kingdom on Sunday, January 28, 2007
Here's the original, the book went to Holystone in January
Tuesday, January 02, 2007

Loved this. I gentle and thoughtful look at the world and our place in it.
Also a reminder of consequences, both obvious and obscure.
There is aline in this that reminds me of Bookcrossers, and life generally:
'strangers... are just family you have yet to come to know'

Like family not all of them suit you, and you don't always get along, but
it is usually a pleasure to get to know them, and there is always a lesson
in getting to know a person, if you are prepared to listen.

Bookcrossing is a great family, and I wish BabyFlylady all the best, since
she's left our 'home', and am glad to hear she's already planning to come
back and visit. (just like family, you think they've moved on, but they
keep coming back ;-)

Will contact holystone and see if she will be at the January meet.

Probably should have read and passed this on a little quicker.

A nice read

Journal Entry 10 by PeaMartian from Durham, County Durham United Kingdom on Monday, August 6, 2007
Received with thanks from Holystone, to be added to my TBR...

Journal Entry 11 by PeaMartian from Durham, County Durham United Kingdom on Tuesday, August 7, 2007
Well, today I am more awake than yesterday, and I realise that I picked up a copy of this book at the last Durham meet, thinking that it was the copy for this bookring that I''d signed up for... You can see the journal for the other copy at:

http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/4866494

So, as I have already read a copy of this book, I''ve contacted Itch2Stich and will move this bookring copy on to them as soon as I can...

So, what did I think of the book? Well, I stand by my journal entry for the other copy:
I''ve seen other reviews of the book that say that reading it is a "life-changing experience", but I certainly didn''t find that myself. I enjoyed the book, and found it to be a nice easy read, but not a complete revelation.

However, I do also agree with Suedo. It''s good to reflect on cause and effect, actions and consequences. Bookcrossing does remind me of the way things are connected in sometimes unexpected ways and it is steadily turning strangers into friends and family...

Thanks for sharing BabyFlyLady!

Finally mailed off today to rudifun23 - I hope you enjoy it as much as I did

Journal Entry 15 by Rudifun23 from Southampton, Hampshire United Kingdom on Thursday, October 4, 2007
Sorry this has taken so long, just finished it. Was ok, more entertaining than Tuesdays with Morrie but both remind me of those annoying syrupy emails you get to forward to 5 friends. But I'm a nice person really! :-)
On its way to Fifna, got no response from Microsquid.

This was an enjoyable read, but by no means, as PeaMartian also said, a 'life-changing' experience. Just a nice, quiet, friendly kind of story. Many thanks for sharing, BabyFlylady! I will PM Joanazinha and get it moving on.
edit: Just wanted to add that it made me wonder who 'my' five people would be....

Journal Entry 18 by wingFifnawing from Voorburg, Zuid-Holland Netherlands on Tuesday, January 22, 2008
Sent the book to Joanazinha yesterday.

Journal Entry 19 by wingJoanazinhawing from Amersfoort, Utrecht Netherlands on Tuesday, January 22, 2008
And today the book arrived at my place. The ringbooks are arriving all at one time at this moment, so this one will have to wait on mount TBR for a little while.

Journal Entry 20 by wingJoanazinhawing from Amersfoort, Utrecht Netherlands on Sunday, February 3, 2008
I liked this book very well, but breath-taking? Nope. Just a very nice, easy and quick read (read most of the book one lazy Sunday-afternoon). I love the idea however of five people, waiting for you after your death, to explain or highlight parts of your life.

I will contact the next in line for an address, so the book can travel again!

Edited to add: soleille incidently signed up twice for this book and she has received the other issue already. Therefore she wants to be skipped of this ringlist. I will PM mallary for her address.
Edited again to add: mallary has also received a copy of the book, so asks to be skipped. I'm going to PM the last person in line :-). (PM sent February 4th)

Update February 8: no reaction from veleta, PM'ed again with request for address.

I've really liked this book. The simple language, the twisted plotline, the straight-to-the-point attitude... The story is touching and Eddie, the main character, realises that he did live a complete and full life, despite of it all. He comes to understand the meaning of his life, and the reader with him.

I've loved the idea of people influencing each other, specially the little girl who will learn in the future why she was saved by Eddie "Maintenance" and why it was worthwhile.
