Smoke Room was so good that I ended up reading the first several pages to my husband (until he finally told me he'd rather read the book himself than hear it in bits and pieces LOL) The way Emerson writes that first sentence is like the wrapped present packed with goodies. The succeeding paragraphs slowly unwrap and unpack until you're presented with a truly unique and bizzare picture. That picture then becomes the novel. I'm a fan if you haven't guessed.

I actually prefer his series books better than the one offs like Smoke Room but I find his ability to bring you into the strange world of firefighters irrisistable.
