Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic Abroad will prove a big treat for fans of The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic with the irrepressible Rebecca Bloomwood, the financial journalist with the stratospheric credit card bills, returning to the high streets. But things have changed for the impulsive shopper: "I'm a completely different person from the old Becky. I'm a reformed character. I haven't even got an overdraft!" Her high-flying boyfriend Luke has got a job in America and Becky's going with him to the land of "yellow taxi cabs and skyscrapers, and Woody Allen and Breakfast at Tiffanys"; she's also got the possibility of a television slot advising viewers on money matters. Of course New York also has department stores, lots of them:
There's always that buzz as you push open the door, that hope, that belief that this is going to be the shop of all shops, which will bring you everything you ever wanted, at magically low prices.
And Rebecca starts to indulge in the poetry of purchasing. Unfortunately she's brought down to earth with a bump, the light and glitter and the voices telling her she was the next big thing are an illusion, her debts are still scary and her boyfriend hates her. So it's back to England for Becky, for an inventive denouement and a delayed happy ending.
This is a hugely engaging novel. The breathless pace speeds you through the story, and Becky's character is so funny and feckless that you'll be laughing out loud, while turning a blind eye to your own credit card bill. This is a must-read for retail therapy addicts everywhere.--Eithne Farry

The second chapter of Becky's life is as funny as the first. Or even more. I love the ending of the book, so the girl isn't so silly as she's supposed to be ;) That's why I liked it.. But, anyway, Becky is Becky, and she's the only one who can act like that :P Just can't believe how many things she can buy...!!

I'm happy to follow Becky soon after reading the first book of the series; I've read that in the American edition, but the original title "The secret dreamworld..." is much more adherent! Becky goes on day-dreaming here...

I just couldn't put it down until I got to the ending... which totally satisfied me!
It's funny with this carachter, I feel like slapping her in the face all the time for the silly things she does and yet I admire her relentless energy: like someone tells her in this book, "She gets things done".

E' davvero incredibile quello che Becky riesce a combinare quando entra nei negozi: soprattutto quando si tratta di fare spese con "soldi non veri".
Fortuna che poi, per la felicità di noi cuori romantici, tutto si risolve al meglio.
Una lettura molto piacevole e divertente, come gli altri libri della serie.

finito...scivolato via come il primo. le disavventure di becky e la sua totale incapacità di controllo di fronte ad un negozio possono essere quasi irritanti, viene da pensare: "Ma possibile che non riesca proprio a trattenersi?", forse perchè non ho la mania dello shopping complusivo e mi è più difficile comprenderla...però a pensarci bene ognuno di noi ha qualche piccola mania che non riesce a controllare...come dire, in ognuno di noi c'è una piccola becky!

I loved Becky's adventures abroad and all the mess she was in. I found very romantic moments in NY but also amusement ones. She has the power to make the world spinning clockwise and counterclockwise even when she doesn't want. I'm starting to love her people, too. Her flatmate Suze could be a perfect friend of mine.

I can't stand her! she gets me on my nerves every time I read her stories> but I do adore reading about her!!! she looks a lot like the woman who shares the office with me: absolutely silly but lucky after all! so far from me and my way of being! I will further on the book as soonest as I get the address of the next one.

I can't like Becky, so was really difficult to enjoy the book, and it didn't make me smile. Sorry.

Anche questo secondo capitolo mi è piaciuto molto, in particolare la forza di Becky nel risollevarsi dai suoi guai dopo averci piagnucolato un po' sopra. Bella tutta l'ultima parte con l'asta, l'apparizione televisiva di "rivincita" e la sua partenza per gli USA, fino allo scontato e atteso happy end.
Mi fiondo subito sul terzo capitolo che ho già a casa da un po'!

L'unico problema l'ho avuto con il mio inglese: all'inizio ho fatto molta fatica, come al solito, salvo poi procedere sempre più spedita man mano che proseguivo con la lettura!
Becky è sempre mitica, mi verrebbe da strangolarla ma alla fine mi risulta impossibile non amarla;-) perchè fa pazzie inimmaginabili per scarpe/vestiti & co., ma conserva intatta l'innocenza e trasparenza d'animo: quando racconta candidamente alla sua capa da Barney's cos'ha combinato nella sua precedente esperienza di commessa mi fa morire!!:-)
Una menzione d'onore alla scena iniziale, con il personale metodo di Backy per fare una valigia intelligente...che naturalmente dà come risultato un baule!!
