Brian Clough - my hero! What potential this novel has. The detail packed in the 1st 50 pages (all I've read so far) is amazing. Brilliantly researched.

OK - completed the book now - definitely didn't disappoint. David Peace really gets under the skin of Brian Clough. Shows him to be weak to temptation and a very emotional man (almost emotionally sick), which I can believe to be true - however much I resist that feeling. Whilst the great man is not here to see witness this portrayal, you must wonder what many of the characters in the book that are still alive, feel about their portrayals.

Very brief synopsis - Brian Clough was manager of Leeds, dirty Leeds, for 44 days. We see each of those 44 days through Cloughies eyes. A confident man lives in the fear of what the next day will bring. We also learn about the events that lead up to him taking the job at Leeds. It appears that there were dark forces at work...

Excellent. This arrived today as part of a trade which has seen 'The Information' by Martin Amis go in the opposite direction. I'm very much looking forward to reading this. Thanks a lot pedropete.

Wow. Just wow. I don't give out 10's lightly, but I'm going to give one here. This is undoubtedly one of the best books I have ever read, and unquestionably the best book I have ever read about football. Clearly the author has gone to town on the research here, so much so that I had to keep reminding myself that this was, in the end, a fictional account of the most turbulent period of Brian Clough's turbulent career.

The writing is superb, the pace is perfect and the detail is wonderful. I have not been able to stop recommending this book to my football loving family and friends since I started reading it.

Thanks again to pedropete for sharing this with me, and thanks to the inimitable Fat Buddha whose glowing praise of this book got me interested in the first place.
