WILD RELEASE NOTES:

RELEASE NOTES:

This is only my second wild release catch ever so I''m quite excited about it! I set up some alerts for Kalamunda after I returned from the UK in June. When I got two notifications today at work, I rang up my mother to see if she was going out at all and she went out to see what she could find :-)

Unfortunately the other book released at Kalamunda Shopping Centre could not be found, but this book at the Glades was still in the phone box, as described!

To be honest, I have such a big TBR pile that I probably won''t be reading it particularly soon, but I''ll put it on my Bookcrossing shelf and see what happens :-)

My motivation for reading this book, finally, was a BC Meetup tomorrow, for which I had no books to take along! I needed fodder and this book was close to hand...

I picked up 'A Keeper of Sheep' as a wild release and had no idea what it was about until I started reading, at which point I thought 'Maybe I should read the blurb', which I did, and was a bit underwhelmed. I still read it.

First off the bat I want to say how irritated I was by the way the author marked out his dialogue. Use quotes Man! There were none and so in some cases it was very hard to identify dialogue from straight description. Sure, I could work it out, but I'd have to stop for a second and think - disengaging me from the story and therefore making the whole thing a bit more distant. Perhaps this was a stylistic choice (the author a poet first and foremost I see), but without quotes, dialogue doesn't 'sound' in my head. It made me less engaged with the book (and I wasn't *that* engaged to begin with).

As to the content, I found it a bit of a jumble. It is a coming of age story, with Penguin (the 20-yo protagonist) facing up to Life and Death? Is it a political statement about AIDS? To be fair, the description of how a community treated a dying man was though provoking, as was the more personal description of how those closest to him acted in his final days. But, having it told by Penguin didn't seem the correct point of view for this story. I kept picturing the book as a LOLcat 'I are a serious book. I are about AIDS'.

(Note my use of QUOTATION MARKS!! ;-)

Anyway, with a bit of skimming, it was a quick read. I'll take it to the meetup tomorrow and see if anyone else would like to give it a go :-)
