Duels at dawn, fierce battles with pirates and impossible rescues - these are the deeds that forged the legend of Zorro. But where did the man begin?

Southern California, late 18th century: Diego de la Vega is a child of two worlds, his father an aristocratic Spaniard, his mother a Shoshone warrior. Growing up he witnesses the brutal injustices dealt to Native Americans. Later, following the example of his fencing master, the young Diego joins a secret movement devoted to helping the powerless. His first steps on the road to heroism have been taken.

I've read somewhere, that this book is about magic reality and I agree with that. "The historical period in which the story happens is fascinating. In the nineteenth century the Western world was changing, the ideas of the French revolution were spreading the concept of democracy and freedom. It was the time of the Napoleonic wars in Europe, the wars of independence in America, the pirates of the Caribbean, the secret societies, the new discoveries in science and exploration of the world...", says Isabel Allende. It was like one of those adventurous books from my childhood and adolescence years, like The Three Musketeers or The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. Really, I found this book highly entertaining! :)

I LOVE Isabel Allende's work. To be honest, I have never been interested in Zorro stories, the films, whatever has been published about him, and I wasn't sure whether I was going to enjoy this book but because it was written by Allende, I wanted to read it. She has a way of drawing you into the stories and I got hooked within a few pages. I am giving it 8 stars only because, as I say, I am not interested in Zorro per se but the book was excellently written with some interesting characters in it (Really liked Bernardo, for example).

I'll continue the book's journey on Monday!

This was brilliant!
I love the idea of telling the story of Don Diego's youth. I couldn't put this book down and finished it in a couple of days.
Thanks very much for this ring voveryte.

It is finally on the way to LittleSuz

A fun book, but it took a while to properly capture my imagination. That may be because I had so much going on in my personal life at the time. (Moved in with my boyfriend last weekend - yay!) I did like Isabel, Regina and Bernado. They were great supporting characters. Diego was fun too. Allende's matter-of-fact way of describing the telepathy between him and Bernado reminded me of House of the Spirits.

I'll now contact fushmush for their address and send the book on ASAP.

Edit: Fushmush is on holiday until May 8th and her profile says to skip her on rings. However, as she's the last particpant before this book goes back to Voveryte I think it'd be better for me to hold onto the book until she returns from holiday. Hope that's OK.
