Cannery Row is a series of vignettes of life on the California coast in the 1930's. The recurring theme Steibeck seems to explore is the nature of friendship - be it the idol-worship of a mentally handicapped kid, the esprit de corps of a group of ne'er do wells, or the stoic relations the central character of "Doc" has with the rest of the community. It was brilliant.
But Steinbeck's writing was also brilliant - the imagery is vivid, the character descriptions real, and the events that unfold in the tiny, blue-collar town of Monterey are plausable. It is easy to read, and easy to understand why it is considered such a classic of American lit.

Journal Entry 3 by Rohrspatz from Duisburg, Nordrhein-Westfalen Germany on Wednesday, October 4, 2006
The book arrived today, so the post was quite fast!
I even have a German copy of the book on my MTBR but hadn't any clue while choosing the excerpt (isn't that the funny thing about the BookXerpting?).
Additionally I'm very delighted about the book, as I plan to read at least 1 book of every Nobel Prize Winner and I haven't read anything by John Steinbeck yet. No need to say, that a book in the original language is always preferable to a translation.
So thank you katayoun, for sending the book to me, I'm curious if I will enjoy it (it's one of your favourites after all). ;-)
