Possibly, just possibly, my favourite of the Casson family books - which is saying a lot! Just wasted a lot of time looking for my 'taking on' of DWJ's Guardian review to give a link, but it turns out to be friends only.

Have completely run out of steam for saying things about this book now, but registering it to send to BlossomU, so maybe she'll say interesting things instead.

With me now, I am very curious about what is happening with the Casson family. Thanks so much H!

I just got to quote a favorite bit, Indigo about reading Malory: "`It´s all muddy and blurry´, agreed Indigo 'It´s like a dirty blurry window. But behind all the blur there is another world I never knew about. And every time I get a new bit to make sense it´s like I´ve cleared another little patch of window and I can see a little further.´" which precisely captures the wonder of reading old books. It´s another world indeed through a blurry window.

Like Hero, I think that review is at least biased ( ok my thoughts were less kind, but really the reviewer seemed to have read a totally different book). There really is a promise in Rose´s name, which we knew from previous books ( maybe problem here is that Rose´s birth is not described as fully as in previous books, it´s just an easy to miss paragraph) and I can´t quite see the Cassons have having a particular void of emptiness due to the lack of conventional housekeeping. They do have a remarkable ability to put up with each other, and that is enviable indeed for all families, and once again here "stray"-children get atracted into the family, and it does them good. As a criticism I got a quibble about point-of-view in the first chapter, but that is the problem of trying to recap events from previous books.

Thanks again for the loan H, I really enjoyed this. Book is now on its way to Katayoun.

thanks so so much, the book is here and i am just delighted, and ooh to know that this is hero's favorite makes is very irresistable to resist. am reading a book that i am not so happy with (and right there is a child in that book that i can so see myself wanting to kick her!) and so it's great to have a lovely book to read! thanks so much.
going to myntti after i'm done, right?

thanks!!! it was great and i am happy that i read indigo's star before this, as knowing about tom was pretty helpful. can maybe even understand bill a bit or well sometimes see that he is good, and i can see that being how he is, how difficult it is to live with his family [spoiler](though reality wise, you don't leave so many children behind and also there is no excuse for saffy)[spoiler]
i'm liking the story more and more, cause the line between balck and white is getting blearier, everyone makes mistakes, everyone is selfish at one time and also everyone got something good to give also. noone's totally good or bad (HURRAH!) even if i do like rose a bit more :)
