I've bought this on holiday in Vienna, I'll read it and release when I've finished. I'll try to get to an internet cafe to write a review and make release notes, but I may not manage to. So, this book might be set free somewhere in Switzerland or France, sometime in September 2006!

I read this on holiday and it gave me nightmares, the atmosphere is just so disturbing. I was glad to get to the end and reach some sort of resolution, but I need to read it again. I've brought it home and will tackle it again before I send it out into the wild.

This is a very interesting book. One of the characters thinks that, while they are growing up, they are given information when they are just too young to understand it, so they know things without being fully aware of their implications. The book is written in much the same way: Ishiguru reveals information just before the reader has a sufficient awareness of the context, so one both knows and doesn't know what is going to happen to the characters.

The atmosphere is very disturbing (even second time around!) and the writing is taut and effective. The story is told by a classic Ishiguru unreliable first-person narrator, whose memories and current activities are woven together to both reveal and hide the circumstances of her life. There are some unanswered questions at the end, but the overall effect is of a very believable alternative reality and a thoughtful exploration of what happens when technological breakthroughs are not considered culturally and ethically until it is too late.

My partner wants to read this, so it will stay on my bookshelves a bit longer.

Nell-Lu's passed this book on to The Lost Book project to be BookCrossed from the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square.

BookCrosser molekilby is going to be taking part in One & Other on 8th September 2009. He's planning to tell the world about BookCrossing, The Lost Book, and the Edinburgh City of Literature when he’s on the plinth.

I'm meeting molekilby this week and will give him this book as part of a small pile for him to BookCross during his hour on the plinth. Good luck molekilby!

Received from The Lost Book in the week for my Fourth Plinth experience. Thanks for all the great books donated.

I've read this book and I agree that it does have a strange atmosphere within it's pages and in my original entry I suggested it would be one to re-read, prior knowledge may open nuances you miss first time around.

Released 14 yrs ago (9/8/2009 UTC) at Trafalgar Square in City of Westminster, Greater London United Kingdom
