Journal Entry 1 by darkpunkangel from Barrie, Ontario Canada on Tuesday, September 12, 2006
Got this at a used bookstore. Different cover. TBR "Painter Elaine Risley, now at mid-life, returns from Vancouver to Toronto, a city she fled many years earlier after the end of her first marriage. While attending a retrospective of her work being shown in the city of her birth, Elaine is obsessed with the memories of her childhood and adolescence. Toronto is a city haunted by the presence of her family, the man she loved, and he enigmatic friend Cordelia. Past and present become one as Elaine journeys from a desire to avenge the betrayals and cruelty of youth to acceptance of the experiences that have created her presents."

This is not Sci-fi - as someone had led me to believe - although there are some strangish elements. It's more of a diary-like telling of a fairly modern, fairly normal (though not really happy) life. I almost gave it up a couple of times in the beginning; it just wasn't catching my interest, but kept plowing on and now I'm about 3/4 through. I still don't feel "swept up" but I've sort of fallen into what I call "OK TV" mode - it's interesting enough to keep watching if there's not much else to do. I'll reserve my star rating until I'm done, in case something awesome happens at the end to change my mind.

Good overall and very insightful. Ms. Atwood has a gift for laying bare human nature's shortcomings and cruelties. Not something I'll read again, though I do plan to explore more of her work. I was very impressed with The Handmaid's Tale, so I'm sure some of her others are better than this one, even if not on par with THT. Thanks for the chance to read it. Mailing on Monday to the next reader.

Journal Entry 8 by nancydotslash from Paradise, Texas USA on Thursday, February 15, 2007
I was hooked from the very first sentence of this book, “Time is not a line, ...” I related in many way, and on many levels, to this story of a lonely woman who is processing a bleak childhood. It could also be called a memoir of an era, in parts. It is about victimization, a psychological study of abuse, childhood “friends” as tormentors, and how these wounds shape us as we grow up, even if we've buried things in the deepest recesses of our minds. No YaYa sisterhood here....I felt this story more truly reflected the reality of how girls behave when adults aren't around. But that is just my own personal experience. Margaret Atwood is gifted at making us think, and remains one of my favorite authors. I shall have to seek my own copy of this book at the used book shop, because I’ll want to read it again one day. Thank you for sharing this book, darkpunkangel, I enjoyed it! I will be sending it on to toyjoy when I get her addy...

I haven't read a single Atwood that I didn't like, and this was no exception. I have to confess, though, that only a little time has to elapse before I find I've completely forgotten the entire plot. I'm starting to think that (apart from being indicative of old age and lacklustre brain cells) this is because Atwood's writing is not so much about plotlines as about themes - reflective meditations on the way individuals navigate the landscape of the interior on the way to forging an identity. She somehow manages to put her finger on, and magically capture, those nebulous and momentary moments that make up who we are. At times this book seemed a bit directionless to me, but maybe that's indicative of life too! Sending on when I receive the address. Thanks again, darkpunkangel, for sharing. *Sent back to darkpunkangel 9th Oct, 2007.
