From the back cover: "For twenty-one-year-old Harriet Purcell life irrevocably changes the moment she steps out the door of her respectable suburban home for the very last time. Ignoring her father's protests that only fools, Bohemians and tarts live in Kings Cross - - a vibrant and colourful district in the heart of Sydney - - she moves into the rooming house owned by Mrs. Delvecchio Schwartz.

As she learns about life, love and men, Harriet finds that following your heart is not always easy . . . But of one thing Harriet is certain - - Mrs. Schwartz's beautiful, mute four-year-old daughter Flo, her beloved angel. In no time, Flo has enchanted Harriet, marking the strength of a lifelong bond."

I really quite enjoyed this book. It's written entirely as a diary kept by Harriet Purcell, a young 21-year-old living in Australia who experiences her 'coming-of-age' into young adulthood in 1960. It's a little off-beat and certainly humourous at times, moving into moments of bittersweet experiences. She moves out of her family's home and into her own apartment in what is considered a questionable part of Sydney, sharing living space in a house with a cast of unique and interesting individuals who help to shape her experiences and viewpoint of the world. Throughout it all she remains a stabalizing force to those around her, and she continues to hold on to the connection of her family while open-mindedly accepting the varying lifestyles of those who newly enter her life. She is immediately connected to her landlady's 4-yr-old daughter, Flo ~ her Angel ~ and their relationship evolves in interesting ways throughout the book.
