AngelfireStar----------Verdon, Nebraska, USA <-------Book Is Here!

Just arrived, and am happily erasing the pencil marks already. Thanks Opinicus for starting this ring.
As I have a couple of bookrings ahead of this, I won't be starting on it immediately, but will do my best to finish it in a reasonable time and send it forward.

A moving tale beautifully told. Naomi is a Japanese Canadian whose idyllic childhood was brutally altered by WWII. While I have read stories about the Japanese American's encampment, this is the first time I read about the plight of their Canadian cousins.

This book will now go to AngelfireStar.

7 out of 10

I'm sorry I've had this book for so long.

I just finished reading it. What a sad time. I had no clue about the events in Canada. I liked the use of letters within the story. Similar to Angelfirestar, some sections were harder to get through for me. Overall, it was a good read and I learned a lot.

Once I get Squeakychu's address, I will mail off.
Thank you Opinicus and Angelfirestar!

Got the book today. Thanks, Opinicus, for sharing it and, bakerwhencan, for sending it!

Quote from the book (which is me, too!):
“She takes half a piece of leftover toast and puts it away in a square plastic container. The refrigerator is packed with boxes of food bits, slices of celery, a square of spinach, half a hard-boiled egg. She orchestrates each remainder of a previous dinner into a dinner to come, making every meal like every meal, an unfinished symphony. Our Lady of the Leftovers”

Edit 07/14/07: No response from Opinicus either through BC PM or LT messaging. :-(

6 out of 10

I finished this book yesterday. The greater story of all the displaced Japanese-Canadians during WWII was one I never knew before. I thought that only happened here in the U.S. So much for my thoughts of a liberal Canada. It hurt me to learn (from Medicine Hat College's website) that Brian Mulroney’s Conservative Government did not give official apology and authorized redress to Japanese Canadians for the treatment they endured before and after war until 1988.

At any rate, I thought the reading was a bit slow, but the author has a quiet, lyrical way of writing. Perchance that was the reason why it didn't move along more quickly for me.

It was such a sad story. The author put so much of her soul into the book. I wonder how much of Naomi's story is that of the author herself.

Here's a link to BCBook World Author Bank with information about the author (Thanks, jessibud). You may want to read it *after* reading this book:

Now I have a problem as I've been unable to reach Opinicus. I think I'll extend the ring to a few more people and hope that, along the way, Opinicus will turn up again and let me know whether or not to return the book.

In the meantime, let's keep this a U.S. ring so the book doesn't get too far afield (and so Americans can learn a bit more about this Canadian author and this sad part of American and Canadian history).

Begin US Bookring - 07/19/07:
SqueakyChu (Maryland) done
cinnycat (New York) done
nynjagrrrl (Wisconsin) done
Bluestocking88 (Washington) done
End US Bookring - 10/27/07

I am ending this bookring because it has reached its next to last participant. The very last participant, Opinicus, never responded to Bluestocking88's PMs. This bookring traveled (for me) to four different US states over a period of three months. Thanks, all, for participating.

I found this to be a valuable story about a very painful and difficult period of history. The story was a little slower than I might have liked, but I did manage to finish the book.

I have not been able to find Opinicus despite posting ISO messages in the forums and sending multiple pm's. As it has been here for six months, I am going to put this book in a bookbox to continue traveling and find new readers.

This was a very slow read for me. The story is interesting, but I had a hard time getting into it while trying to keep all of the characters separate. I wanted to finish it though because I was unaware of this particular bit of history in Canada.
I remember learning about similar events in America. I was in high school before it was ever taught as part of history class, and I was shocked.

I am going to release this book to my new OBCZ.

I picked this up at Colors Cafe a couple of days ago, but then left it in my car and forgot to journal it. I look forward to reading it. I have recently read a few other books about the Japanese during WWII and have been fascinated.

6 out of 10

This was a very slow read. The book often lost my attention. Especially in the flashbacks and dreams. I found myself putting it down often without wanting to pick it back up. Or maybe I just wasn't in the mood for this kind of book right now.
