"Kafka on the Shore" follows the fortunes of two remarkable characters. Kafka Tamura runs away from home at fifteen, under the shadow of his father's dark prophesy. The aging Nakata, tracker of lost cats, who never recovered from a bizarre childhood affliction, finds his pleasantly simplified life suddenly turned upside down. Their parallel odysseys are enriched throughout by vivid accomplices and mesmerising dramas. Cats converse with people; fish tumble from the sky; a ghostlike pimp deploys a Hegel-spouting girl of the night; a forest harbours soldiers apparently un-aged since WWII. There is a savage killing, but the identity of both victim and killer is a riddle. And the end is not an end.

I liked the book, that is, I wanted to read and finish it, but I'm slightly disappointed. It's all rather over the top. All those almost explicit references to mythology and other symbolics, for example. Kafka is not a teenager but somehow an old man in a young boy (except for his thoughts and deeds in sex), the Kentucky Fried Chicken King and Johnny Walker, etc. The concept 'a boy named Crow' was simply pretentious and did not add extra meaning to the story.
I liked Hoshina. Yes. I liked him a lot. He was very human. Another thing is: Murakami can write (and his translator understands his profession too)so I'll take up another book by his hand.

Door werk en andere tijdrovende zaken zijn mijn ringboeken een beetje op de achtergrond geraakt. Ik heb nu weer alle tijd, dus..... U hoort van mij.

Ik kan er zelf niet toe komen het boek verder te lezen, terwijl ik het helemaal geen naar boek vindt, vreemd! Het begon in mijn nek te hijgen vandaar dat het verder mag reizen. Skoi overgeslagen (wegens onbekendheid en in overleg met yvonnep), iiwi had het boek in het Nederlands gekocht (en was vergeten dat er een ring van was), dus het boek kan snel op reis naar eowyn-unquendor. Ik ga haar nu mailen!

Ik heb het boek vandaag, 23 februari, naar het postkantoor gebracht.

"Kafka" lag vandaag in mijn brievenbus met een mooi kaartje erbij; dank je wel Janna2!

Ik ben erg benieuwd naar dit boek. Ik heb nog nooit wat van Haruki Murakami gelezen, maar dit boek won in 2006 de World Fantasy Award. En dat is voor mij aansporing genoeg om mijn boeken-horizon te verbreden :)

I haven't read other work of this author, but since I liked this one I think I will not hesitate to pick up his other work.
This book is 'subtle'. The writings are clear, and despite the many pages it's not a book to speed-read. It's a book to read carefully because of the clear, neat use of the (English) language.

If you have enjoyed the World Fantasy Award from the year before ("Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell" from Susanna Clark), go and read this one too!
I would give away too many spoilers if I tried to tell you what the story is about, so let me say that this book is only slightly fantasy, like "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell", so no dragons, quests or swords in here. It's also a book which reminded me a bit of Neil Gaiman's work.
Excellent stuff, but there are a few gore pages in it which I happily skipped. And despite the nice writing the plot is a bit too 'thin' for my liking. I didn't think it was 'over the top', but then again I'm used to a lot :)


Ik heb even overlegd met YvonneP, en ze vindt dat dit boek een tweede kans verdiend, dus wellicht is er een liefhebber (of zelfs meerdere) te vinden voor een voortzetting van de ring (ringetje).

De ring gaat verder met:

tijdens de lentemeeting in Gouda ontvangen. Tot nu toe niet gemeld, waar ik terecht op gewezen ben. Ik ga vandaag de volgende in lijn nog een keer pm-en. Dat deed ik een tijdje terug al omdat ik het door wil sturen, maar hoorde niets (er komen vaker PM's niet goed aan).
