Uncorrected proof. Good read especially if you can accept not getting the answers to all your questions.

Got it in the mail yesterday. Just going to finnish the book i'm reading now before i start this one. Thank you so much stormon :-)
This is probably one of the best books i have ever read!
From the cover: "In 1936 the Schwartz, an imigrant family to escape Natzi Germany, settle in a small town in upstate New York, where the father, a former high school teacher, is demeaned by the only job he can get: gravedigger and the cemetary caretaker. After local prejudice and the family's own emotional frailty result in unspeakable tragedy, the gravedigger's daugher, Rebecca, begins her astonishing pilgrimage into America: an odessy of erotic risk and imaginative daring, ingenious self-invention and, in the end, a bittersweet - but very American - triumph. "You are born here, so they will not hurt you" - so the gravedigger has predicted for his daughter, which will turn out to be true."
I loved everything about this story. The language is so raw and naked, and the author is using it very successfully to explore the the feelings and mentality of the main character Rebecca. She herself is a lean, mean survival machine ... and do not take for granted the "American triumph" mentioned on the cover. Nothing comes for free in Rebeccas world. This is epic.

The book arrived in Stavanger today. It will be passed on to gunvor when I've read it.
For some unknown reason I could not really get into this book. It actually took me over a month to finish!
I quite liked the story, so I don't really know why the book didn't agree more with me. Maybe it was just the time and the place? Very hectic at work and home etc.
Anyways, the book will travel with my mother to Denmark in a couple of weeks time.

Received the book during Christmas from Haugtussa, looking forward to reading it.
I don't know what took me so long to start reading this book, probably the number of pages (600). However, I was blown away already by the first chapter. The story of Rebecca/Hazel and the horrors she witnessed and the sacrifices she had to make really hurts to think about, I quite agree with wildwolverine that she is a lean, mean survival machine! I can't help to think of how much power the parents have on their childrens self-esteem and beliefs in the world. Even though Jacob Schwartz was a desperate man, I feel little pity for him, he responsibilities towards his children he didn't fulfil.
I'll see if the book wants to travel further in the world.
28/2-12 update
The book will be sent further as a ray.
