I SHOULD have read this by now, and intend to, but life being short...it was written by a fellow St. Louisan who went to high school where my sons did. It's going to icila, who knows much more about Africa than I do, and who I hope will enjoy it.
I'm sure I shall enjoy this book. Thanks petitcercle !
Very interesting reading. Only a black american could feel and say the true Africa.

A slow, but fascinating read about a difficult journey. At times the author is a bit too melodramatic for my taste but sometimes he makes some good points. I especially like this quote:
"African standards of right and wrong are not Western standards. Right and wrong, good and bad are functions of tradition and history. Too often they are mere luxuries.
Perhaps a traveler ought not judge at all. He should lift his foot from the world he left behind and set it down solidly in he world where he finds himself. He should accept all he sees and all he experiences, take it all in stride. For is it not judgment also to spit out bad meat, judgment to hate poverty and filth, judgment to crave justice where there seems to be none?"
