I thought this was quite funny but it had serious undertones. Its not like any of the other Margaret Atwood books I've read. I would recommend it tho.

Journal Entry 5 by Hawkette from Ballarat, Victoria Australia on Saturday, October 07, 2006
This wasn't my favourite Atwood book, but I can see how she progressed from here to The Blind Assassin, and others. I wonder how much of this book, and the way Joan writes is how Atwood herself comes up with her plots! The twists and delusions in the book, the need to be someone else, the self-concept issues - all so sad, and so real. The need for a rescuer throughout. The need for drama. And the vulnerability for being others' target. Joan is one messed up individual! I wasn't drawn in like other Atwood's I have read, but she leads up through many paths to get her final stage. I will be sending this one on to PurpleElephant this week...

Journal Entry 7 by PurpleElephant from Glastonbury, Somerset United Kingdom on Saturday, November 04, 2006
I thouroughly enjoyed this book. The style was simple and complelling and found myself reading fast to try and piece together the fragments of Joan's life. As always with Atwood the line between fantasy and reality is blurred beyond recognition. I also found interesting the insights into spiritualism and writing. To be passed on to letra as soon as i have an address.

I've had a baby in October and not much (or any!) time to read since then. I am a big fan of Margaret Atwood, so I'm probably going to buy my own copy of this book, but right now the ring should go on - I've just PMed the next person on the list so that I can mail him the book. Sorry everybody for keeping you waiting!

I really liked the book, it was very enjoyable and a pleasure to read. Clever and witty, well-written and with a wonderful heroine, it confirmed once more my love for Margaret Atwood's books. I sent it to Sugaryfun this morning. Thank you for the bookray NICNIC2!!!

I agree with other readers who have commented that this is atypical of Atwood's usual style. However, that seems to agree with me more. Usually I tend to enjoy Atwood's prose while the plot seems to completely bypass me (ie. a day or so after reading, I have completely forgotten the storyline... makes owning her books very worthwhile!). This time, however, I noticed the quality of her prose less, and the plot (and themes) slightly more. Having recently finished her compatriot Carol Shield's Unless, which covers surprisingly similar territory (female writer struggling towards self-assertion against societal and personal constraints), I must say I much prefer Atwood's treatment - much subtler, more well-rounded, and touchingly tragicomic. I wasn't totally convinced by Arthur as a main character though, but that is a slight quibble in an enjoyable read. I've PMed dutchbooky and will continue Lady Oracle's travels soon.

This was my first Atwood book. Found it a bit hard to get into it, but once it caught my attention, I just had to get to the end. I cannot really comment on her style of writing, since I do not know any of her other books. This is one of her first novels and I can imagine that her style developed over the years. I found Lady Oracle a pleasant read, although I sometimes had difficulty with keeping track of everything that happened. I will definitely look out for Atwood's other work! PM-ing the next reader for an address.
