have finished the book, and pm'ed concertina8 who's next on the list. awaiting the address.
the book is already on its way to concertina8. enjoy!!
Wow, first time ever that I received mail from Saudi Arabia. How cool! I'm currently in the middle of a book (and who isn't, eh?) but will of course read this next. Thx to all involved!
uhm....just realized that not only did i finish this book nearly two weeks ago, but i already sent it on to the next participant last week. and i totally forgot to journal. stupid me!
i really, really enjoyed reading this book. i much prefer "memoir" style books on things i don't know much about to (really dry) non-fiction - mostly because memoirs - to me - are much more accessible, even if a classic non-fiction book might be much more informative. hence, this book was right down my alley.
i believe that most of us "westerners" (most of europe and the english speaking world and such) don't really know much about cultures very different from our own.
what did i know about tehran, the iran/iraq conflict, the culture and restrictions before reading this book? well, i would probably have found it on a map (given some time....) and i would have made some connection to "women in black clothing & veils" - let's just say that my knowledge was somewhat limited (and probably still is).
do we (again, the so-called "western world") actually realize how *free* we are in comparison to other parts of our planet?
as mentioned before, the book has been traveling on for a few days now and will hopefully arrive in finland any day now.
EDITED for some "re-construction"

I found the chapters about living in Iran quite interesting. (It's really shameful how little I know about their near history!) The author is a few years older than I, and I really cannot imagine how it feels to see how different your daughter's life will be compared to the freedom and great possibilities you (and women in general) had in your youth. A quote from the book:
"Living in Islamic republic is like having sex with a man you loathe.... you make your mind blank - you pretend to be someone else, you tend to forget your body, you hate your body. That's what we do here. We are constantly pretending to be somewhere else - we either plan it or dream it."
The chapters about the reading group or literature class were not that interesing to me, as I've not read all the books discussed. Anyway, this was a great read. I will send the book along to Tintti asap.
This was nr 13 in guinaveve's Keep them Moving challenge for 2007.

I got the book yesterday. I've wanted to read it for a long time, but I had totally forgotten this ring! I'll start reading the book soon.
I knew (and still know) very little about Iran and its history, so reading this book was very interesting. Now I feel I'd like to learn more about Iranian culture. This is one reason why I love books - I can relax and enjoy a good story, and at the same time learn things and get to know different cultures.
Like Piiku, I haven't read the classics they discussed in the reading group meetings. Maybe I would've enjoyed the book even more if I had, but it doesn't really matter because I enjoyed this book a lot anyway. Thanks for letting me read this!
I'll send the book to Annelis soon.

The book arrived yesterday. I have heard so much about this book and now I can read it. Thank you, Morsecode!
Oh no! Reading this book took too long a time! And then it is such a nice and enjoyable book. Well, many times I got rather angry when I thought how it would feel to live under the pressure the persons in the book had to endure.
I am not a very submissive person, on the contrary, and I would be in prison or dead if I had to live in a country like that. Or would I? It is easy to follow one's own judgement in behaviour and say what one thinks in a free country like ours where women are more equal than anywhere else (but still not quite equal). If I were born in Iran I would be different, but would I be content with the circumstances? I don't think so.
The book really is worth reading. Thank you, Morsecode, for making it available!
This book is my #38 in Keep Them Moving Challenge by Guineveve

How come this is not reached ecmwfinswe yet? I was going to Spain in July and asked my husband to post the book. He posted this book and another by economy mail, but it should not take the book this long to reach the neighbouring country. It is more than a month since I got back from Spain. Let's hope the book is not lost. I shall look for another copy in second hand book shops. I don't know if I can find one.
This book has washed ashore at the Lost Book Island after not being heard from for many months. This new arrival will be shown to a room and be allowed a bit of rest before being introduced to the many fun things to do here at the island.
All around there are books sipping cool drinks under shady palms while other books participate in a wide variety of beach sports. There is plenty of sand, surf and sun here for all of the lost and wayward books to enjoy.
It is hoped that very soon a new journal entry will come to rescue this book from the island and send it back out into the BookCrossing world so that it may continue on its journey. It is hoped that the new journal entry will tell all the interested parties where this book has been this long time and where it will be traveling to next.
