I've had this book for a while, and only now started reading it. It's about a planet (place, realm) where there is some magic, some interdimensional transfers of flotsam, and some ships made of "wizardwood," which come alive after three generations of close contact with the same family.

The story follows one family that has a ship about to quicken, one ruthless pirate, and several other characters connected to them. I'm sure that they're all going to meet sooner or later.
