Journal Entry 1 by book-man-8 from Tübingen, Baden-Württemberg Germany on Wednesday, August 30, 2006
McEwan is really quite a fascinating writer. These are nearly 300 very tightly packed pages of a saturday in a sucessful man's life. Of course, a lot of things (small and others) happen within that day. But it is also full of thoughts remembrances and other associations. At times it might look a little bit tenous. But there is also quite an interesting view in medical neurosurgery, old age and brain "loss", as well as political insights in the islamic/western problem. Probably not the most easy reading, but an author that has to be read...

I am making a bookray out of this book. The following people take part in this bookray:

"fio-dagua" from Porto, Portugal

Edit, January 20, 2007. This bookray is not stalled as I thought. The book is now with LindyLouMac...

But I already have registered and sent on a replacement bookray: http://bookcrossing.com/journal/4746250

Oh no its NOT......stalled that is! Just finished opening the post that was waiting on my return and very shocked and surprised to get this parcel from Fio-Dagua, along with another book I had been waiting some months for from her. No idea how long parcel took in the post as no journal entries and unable to read postmark. However thanks for sending them. I will now let book-man-8 know the good news and find out what I should do next. I know he found a replacement copy as did I in a UK charity shop on my recent visit! My copy is as yet unregistered but I will be registering, reading and releasing eventually.

Ok the Interrupted Bookray is ready to travel again. I will wait to read my own copy but via the forum have found two new readers for this copy. Once I have an address I will get this in the post. If I hear from anyone else will just add them to the bottom of the very short list.

Arrive at KT-J's this morning, she's got another bookring to finish first and I've just finished one so I'll read this first, thanks for sharing this with us.

Journal Entry 13 by stubee from Bury, Greater Manchester United Kingdom on Monday, May 14, 2007
A very intriguing novel, I’ve really started to like McEwan as an author since I’ve reading his work on bookrings and as part of Peter Boxall’s “1001 books to read before you die”.

This is a day in the life of Henry Perwone a neurosurgeon in a paranoid post 9/11 England; and this is his Saturday! An extraordinary tale of what can happen during one day in someone’s life and how events can unfold due to our responses to certain circumstances.

I’ve passed this on to KT-J to read, I think she’s a bit overwhelmed with bookrings at the moment but as were last in the list I’m guessing that’s ok.

Thanks for sharing :-]

Journal Entry 14 by KT-J on Monday, May 14, 2007
Received back from Stubee. I'm expecting a couple of other bookrings shortly but will get round to reading this as soon as possible. If anyone else is interested in reading this book though I will bump it up my to be read list!

Journal Entry 15 by KT-J on Friday, June 22, 2007
I read this on holiday and I enjoyed it. It was really interesting to read with all the actual events interspersed with the medical descriptions and all the memories and trains of thought. I hadn't expected it to be so intense in places but it was really well written and had some interesting thoughts on our modern world.

I definitely like McEwans books, they are all so different in style which makes it interesting when you wonder exactly what you're going to get with each book!

Since the bookray is now finished we're planning to find someone to send this on to so it will keep travelling through the bookcrossing world!

Journal Entry 18 by wingHaugtussawing from Stavanger, Rogaland fylke Norway on Sunday, August 12, 2007
I found this book a really good read.
I had to force myself through the first pages as I''ve got a very weak stomack when it comes to anything to do with hospitals! After that I was really fasinated at how it is possible to write an entire novel about only one day! Loved the reflections that Henry makes both about the present and the past.
An added joy was that when I was at college a lot of my friends used to go to UCL, we went for runs in Regents Park - just like Henry, and I could easily picture the streets he was describing!

I''ll get the book in the post as soon as I''ve got ThursdayN''s address.

I really liked this book! When I wasn't reading it, I found myself thinking aboout it and sometimes images from it popped up in my head, which is not often considering how many books I read in a year. I really look forward reading more of his books in the future!

I have bookmaniac70's adress and will send the book asap.

Journal Entry 23 by bookmaniac70 from София / Sofia, Sofiya Bulgaria on Monday, September 10, 2007
Very quick arrival, thank you,ThursdayN,and for the card, too! I`m finishing another book and will start reading in 1-2 days.

Journal Entry 24 by bookmaniac70 from София / Sofia, Sofiya Bulgaria on Saturday, September 15, 2007
I had difficulty involving in the story. Yes, for me it was a bit tenous. The idea of building a novel upon one day of man`s life was great, and certainly many things may happen in one day but I couldn`t escape the feeling that politics was a bit enforced into the plot. From the other side,we need writers registering the pulse of the days,so perhaps I`m not right. It was interesting, though,to follow the change Henry experienced within one day,and how he felt differently about the war in Iraq, when the violence became a personal experience, and not something remote and indifferent on the newspapers.

I`m going now to PM darjeeling and pass the book.

Journal Entry 25 by bookmaniac70 from София / Sofia, Sofiya Bulgaria on Thursday, September 20, 2007
I sent a second message today to darjeeling as there was no reply to my first one.

Journal Entry 26 by bookmaniac70 from София / Sofia, Sofiya Bulgaria on Thursday, September 27, 2007
No reply so far from darjeeling,so I`m going to PM next person,Maria-Nunes, and if darjeeling shows interest meanwhile, they can successfully contact each other,as they both live in Lisboa,Portugal.

Journal Entry 27 by bookmaniac70 from София / Sofia, Sofiya Bulgaria on Monday, October 8, 2007
I`m sorry for being a bit late with mailing the book. It was sent today to Maria-Nunes.

Journal Entry 30 by wingMaria-Nuneswing from Lisboa - City, Lisboa (cidade) Portugal on Wednesday, November 14, 2007
I'm 10 pages away from the end, so I already contacted the next reader.

I found some parts of this book a bit too much descriptive about cirurgical matters... and I must confess that only about page 150 I begun really interested on the plot... but I am now enjoying reading this book of Ian McEwan (one more of many of his books I've already read)

Thanks for sharing!!

Sorry for keeping the book almost one month... and thanks for sharing!!

Arrived safe and sound. One bookring ahead of it and OH YES the HOLIDAY Crazies. Got my 10 boxes shipped out so I can relax and start to read some more. Many Thanks for sharing. Will post reaction when finished.

Journal Entry 33 by tiatia from Fredericksburg, Virginia USA on Monday, December 31, 2007
Amazing to compress the emotions and family dynamics of one "ordinary" day into so few pages. The author has vignette within vignette. Enjoyed the choice of language and the gamut of emotions expressed. The assault was a bit predictable (a bit too clockwork orange for me) but well worked out eventually.
Off to Florida on Wednesday (the post office is closed on the 1st). What a great end to a fabulous bookcrossing year! Many thanks for sharing.

Journal Entry 34 by wingDove-i-Libriwing from Cape Coral, Florida USA on Wednesday, January 9, 2008
The book got here to Florida ... in the middle of renovating our new house to move into! It looks very intense and I'm not sure that I can get to it. I promise that if I don't begin it within a week, I'll send it on to the next person anyway. Sending for their address now ...

Edited to add: The book binding is broken and some pages have come loose. I'll try to tape them, but I'm a pretty "wrinkly" taper. Hope it comes out good!!!

Edited AGAIN to add: I started to read this book after all! (I'm so bad!) Will make another Journal Entry when I'm done and the book is on its way again ...

Added Jan 18, 2008: Link to forum entry about what I've been reading: Book Talk Forum Post (Click Here)

Jan 20, 2008: Finally made it 1/4 of the way through! As I said before, it's not that I'm not enjoying it, McEwan is a gifted writer, noticing small details and including them every step of the way, it's just that I'm so busy trying to fix our new place and move within the next two weeks that I can't seem to find more time to read. But I'm getting through it, and will have the book traveling again soon!

Added 1-29-08: Finally! Almost finished! Will send this book out to Cyber-Librarian on Saturday, February 2, 2008!

I really liked this story ... besides being so impressed by Ian McEwan's attention to details and his wonderful descriptions of things, I was really intrigued by the ethical dilemma that the main character faced by the end of the book ... but I can't include spoilers! I suppose I'm not used to internal, introspective books by male authors. How's that for a BROAD stereotype? That must mean just one thing ... I have to read MORE of them!

I did pick this book up at the post office last week from DoveiLibri in FL ... as part of this bookray. I'm sorry I didn't journal before now as RL has been a bit crazy getting the house painted to put on the market. I have 2 other bookrays ahead of this one, but I promise to get it read and passed on as soon as possible. RL should calm down in 1-2 weeks ... then I can read while waiting for the house to sell. With this market, I'll have a long time to read before moving. haha

c. 2005 -- 279 pages -- Trade Paperback -- #81 on BookCrossing 2006 Favorites list

Back Cover: Saturday, February 15, 2003. Henry Perowne is a contented man - a successful neurosurgeon, the devoted husband of Rosalind and proud father of 2 grown-up children. Unusually, he wakes before dawn, drawn to the window and filled with a growing unease. As he looks out at the night sky he is troubled by the state of the world - the impending war against Iraq, a gathering pessimism since 9/11, and a fear that his city and his happy family life are under threat.

Later, as Perowne makes his way through London streets filled with hundreds of thousands of anti-war protesters, a minor car accident brings him into a confrontation with Baxter, a fidgety, aggressive young man, on the edge of violence. To Perowne's professional eye, there appears to be something profoundly wrong with him. But it is not until Baxter makes a sudden appearance as the Perowne family gathers for a reunion that Henry's earlier fears seem about to be realized.

UPDATE (3/6/08): RL keeps getting in the way of my reading time ... but I'm constantly trying to find a break to read. You can check my profile, as I'll try to update it daily with the page number that I'm on. We're getting our house ready to sell, so I've had painters and carpet guys here plus de-cluttering and de-personalizing. We should go on the market by 3/14 and then I can sit back and read while Realtors show the house.

UPDATE (3/22/08): I finished the 1st bookring ... now I'm reading the 2nd bookray ... and then I'll be able to start this one. Thanks everyone for their patience, I'm trying to find as much reading time as I can.

UPDATE (3/29/08): I finished the bookray ahead of this one ... so now I can concentrate on getting this read.

Journal Entry 37 by ReadingGal79 from Antioch, Illinois USA on Friday, April 4, 2008
I finished reading this today. A very interesting read that held my attention ... almost as good as Atonement. It's fascinating how much you can write into one character's life. I enjoyed all the different bits with his family and co-workers that came together to make up the whole.
