Journal Entry 1 by catsalive from Rooty Hill, New South Wales Australia on Tuesday, September 19, 2006
From Publishers Weekly Devotees of the late Rex Stout's bestsellers will be pleasantly surprised by Goldsborough's first story about Nero Wolfe. Related by the elephantine genius's faithful assistant Archie Goodwin, this mystery starts when Maria Radovich asks him to intercede for her with Wolfe. She's worried over threats against her great-uncle Milan Stevens, controversial new director of the New York Symphony. Since Stevens, ne Mikos Stefanovic, had saved the detective's life years earlier in Montenegro, Wolfe agrees to take the case. Before he can act, however, someone stabs the musician fatally in his apartment. The police arrest Jerry Milner, a violinist with the orchestra and Maria's fiance, but Wolfe demolishes the evidence against him. While his boss remains sedentary, Archie obeys orders to go looking for information about other suspects: the victims's sponsor who regrets his choice of director; musicians whom the maestro had publicly insulted; the glamorous society woman who had been his frequent companion. As always, Wolfe solves the puzzle without moving from the famous brownstone on 37th St.

Journal Entry 3 by krin511 from Olney, Maryland USA on Monday, April 09, 2007
Arrived today - thanks! My thoughts: This was my first Nero Wolfe read, and it won't be the last. I enjoyed how Wolfe and Archie gradually solved the case and confronted the real killer. [Finished 3/6/2011]

Journal Entry 5 by 6of8 at Silver Spring, Maryland USA on Tuesday, November 15, 2011
Picked this one up at the meet-up on Sunday just because the stack of unclaimed books was so large. Of course, I have plenty of books to read, so it was just an act of mercy on my part and I would then find a place to wild release it. Finished the first two chapters this morning -- looks like fun! So much for good intentions!

Journal Entry 6 by 6of8 at Silver Spring, Maryland USA on Wednesday, November 16, 2011
A delightful mystery and a very fast read. Only my second book featuring Nero Wolfe and I quite enjoyed it, although I really wish that the man's weight weren't mentioned so often. I understand it's a gimmic and of the time-period, but it got a bit old. Other than that, though, I really liked the book and thought the mystery aspect was well-done. I didn't get whodunit, although I did see the clue that solved the mystery for Wolfe -- apparently I didn't attach the right significance to it. Will hold on to this for now, since I think it would be a great addition to the Mystery VBB I participate in, which is on holiday hiatus until January.
