Excellent Vonnegut novel. One of his best!
From an Amazon.com review:
Kurt Vonnegut's "Cat's Cradle" is the story of a man, Jonah, who is writing about the "end of the world," or the day when the atom bomb was dropped. His work on the book encourages him to go on many journeys which ultimately leave him in a somewhat ironic yet very comedic position. The story features an imaginative religion, a scientific potion, and a far off society as part of Vonnegut's many bizarre episodes. Jonah, researches the "father of the atom bomb" and his children in order to determine what they were doing on the day the atom bomb was dropped. Seemingly against his will, Jonah gets pulled into a plethora of discoveries about the children and their father which he never could have imagined to be true. His journeys ultimately land him, along with the children, on a secluded island with a radically different society from their own.

Thanks for the book. This is a special book.
I had already read it and that is what I think of it :
"I enjoyed the book. There are some chapters that are still "up-to-date". I agree with both of you, it's hard to get into the book from the start but in the end it was a nice read especially when it deals with "the stupidity of mankind" and its seeking of mass destruction weapons. Well at least that was the way my point of view..."
Why a special book ?
I've just read "Sirens of Titan" by the same author and the next bookcrosser for this bookray wishes to read Vonnegut's books (he says this on his profile) so as I'm taking part in the Around the world challenge 2006 and I haven't sent a book to Hungary yet : this book will be a surprise for him !!!
Thanks for making this RABCK possible !
Happy BC \o/

I will start soon, you can be sure!
I will start soon, you can be sure!
Well, this is quite a surprise and a good one too, thanks juhturo.
I'll read it soon and then pass it along.

A brilliantly written book, the story unfolds in layers and with such humour and wit that the impeding doom doesn’t really feel as dramatic as it should.
The Bokonon philosophy is, simply put, brutally honest, dealing mainly with the human stupidity and assuming what it is, a bunch of lies written to distract the miserable San Lorenzans from their pointless and bleak lives.
I was really impressed by the author’s craftsmanship in creating such an interesting and griping story.
Bokonism, with all its lies, really grabbed my attention as a religion, of sorts, and this pearl of a thought ringed honest and made me wonder why real religions can’t be as direct as this one, but then Man must make explanations for everything.
”In the beginning God created the earth, and he looked upon His cosmic loneliness.
And God said, “Let Us make living creatures out of mud, so the mud can see what we have done”:
And God created every living creature that now moveth, and one was man. Mud as man alone could speak. God leaned close as mud as man sat up, looked around, and spoke. Man blinked “What is the purpose of all this?” he asked politely.
“Everything must have a purpose?” Asked God
“Certainly”, said man
“Then I leave you to think of one for all this” said God.
And He went away.”

Thank you for sending me this rabck. I've heard a lot about the author but this is the first book of his that I've tried. Thank you for sending it to me! xx
Hmmm, not sure I want to try any more from this author. The whole story of this alternate religion really annoyed me, the characters were cardboard cutouts who seemed to have no real point to them especially the so called most beautiful woman they had ever seen. I was quite pleased when the ice finally did its thing and put an end to it all!
