This mystery involves a young man who is an amateur rider of steeplechase horses. He is content to live modestly, but his 5-times-married father is rich and surrounded by nagging ex-wives and their petulant children, who feel that they deserve more money. He hasn't heard from his father for three years, after telling the old man that his intended fifth wife wants only his money. Then his father calls, asking for help: someone is trying to kill him.

As usual, Dick Francis makes the story interesting, human, and informative at the same time.
