Synopsis:Amazon.co.uk
Jealousies, distrust, and hidden rivalries uncover dark secrets, then a dozen vials of a deadly virus go missing. As a blizzard whips out of the north on Christmas Eve, several people converge on a remote family house. Stanley Oxenford, director of a pharmaceutical research company, has everything riding on a drug he is developing to fight a lethal virus. Several others are interested in his success too: his children, at home for Christmas with their offspring, have their eyes on the money he will make; Toni Gallo, head of his security team and recently forced to resign from the police, is betting her career on keeping it safe; an ambitious local television reporter sniffs a story, even if he has to bend the facts to tell it; and a violent trio of thugs are on their way to steal it, with a client already waiting. As the storm worsens and the group is laid under siege by the elements, the emotional sparks crackle and dark secrets are revealed that threaten to drive Stanley and his family apart for ever. Filled with startling twists, "Whiteout" is the ultimate knife-edge drama from an international bestselling author who is in a class by himself.

5 out of 10

My husband normally really enjoys Ken Follett novels so I was rather surprised that he found this rather tame and shallow. The story was OK in itself but just not up to the authors usual standard in his opinion.

This title is now travelling to Finland as part of a trade I recently set up with Sobergirl.

So sorry but this was not my kind of book.
"Medical terror" gives me the creeps.
Books/stories like these give me insomnia.

RELEASE NOTES:

Maybe it will be WHITE OUTdoors tonight when I release this book outside Turku Cathedral? Sometime after 5 pm. I'll try hanging it on a branch on the Xmas tree in front of the church. The book will only have some string around it as I've run out of BC release bags!

Woo-hoo! An unexpected wild catch!

Last night I went to Turku Cathedral for a Christmas carol singalong (Kauneimmat joululaulut) with about 1500 other people (so said the staff, and I believe them - the Cathedral officially seats 900, and already when I arrived all the seats were taken and lots of people were standing in the aisles or sitting on the floor). [The empty seats visible in the photograph were reserved for the deaf. The woman you see is not conducting but signing the words of the carols in sign language!]

We had gotten a parking space not far from the front entrance of the Cathedral, and afterwards, as we turned the car around to leave, the headlights swept across the Christmas tree... and I gasped and stopped the car.

My husband said, "What?!"

And I answered, "There's a bookcrossing book on that tree!" Hopped out, grabbed the book, and then drove off. A perfect finish to our Christmassy evening! I will try to pick a good book to replace on the tree tomorrow.

This has been on my shelf for too long! Although I enjoyed reading The Eye of the Needle years ago, and Pillars of the Earth more recently, I am just not in the mood for thrillers these days and so I think it's time to let this book free again.

I'll take it to the All-Finland bookcrossing meeting, kesäpäivät.
