Here's the plan! :)

Knit 20 rows in a yarn of your choice, and somehow embroider your BC name (and country and the date if you like) onto your section. Then send it on to the next BCer, who does the same. Once it's done it'll come back to me, I'll post a picture of the completed scarf in the last journal entry - thanks for that idea, ktwalker!

Many thanks to fly46 for reminding me that I intend to have a blank book in the package, so that people can write a little bit about themselves and maybe some stories about knitting - this is because only a book can have a BCID, and it'll be a nice way to keep track of the scarf. The book and the scarf should not be separated! :)

Instead of posting the knitting needles, EditorGrrl suggests we thread the stitches onto some scrap yarn, which sounds dead sensible and I bet it's cheaper to post. So I'll do this, or something similar. :)

Then, to raise some money for BookCrossing, I'll auction the scarf in the forums or on eBay, depending on which people prefer.

Feel free to post some pictures of the scarf being knitted or anything like that! :)

Thanks for sending this on ktwalker. I must apologize profusely for my late JE. The same week I received this I acquired a little rescue doggie from the RSPCA. I was worried about her destroying the scarf so hid it out of her reach. I then started knitting cute dog-clothes, and before I knew it, the scarf had completely disappeared from my mind!

I will get this finished and sent out next week. Apologies to everyone for holding the proceedings up, and hello to all you fellow Bookcrossing knitters out there, it's great to know there are like-minded people!

Journal Entry 6 by ratwoman from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Friday, January 12, 2007
Hooray, I've finally finished my bit! Have just PM'd Nell-Lu and will send it on as soon as I hear back. It'll be so exciting to see how this grows!

Posted off to Nell-Lu today. Good luck scarf!

Journal Entry 8 by Nell-Lu from Edinburgh, Scotland United Kingdom on Monday, January 22, 2007
This arrived on Saturday. Thanks, ratwoman for sending it to me - I love your rat motif in the scarf! - and lottiotta, for starting the ring. Here's a photo showing what the scarf looks like at the moment.

I'm thinking about what to do in my 20 rows. I'll be seeing ShuChan on Wednesday so will try to finish my bit by then and pass it on.

Journal Entry 9 by Nell-Lu from Edinburgh, Scotland United Kingdom on Thursday, January 25, 2007
I'm half-way through my contribution. I've knitted my bit of scarf, but I haven't yet written in the journal. I've passed the scarf on to ShuChan and will let her have the journal later in the week. I'll post another photo when ShuChan has knitted a section too.

Journal Entry 10 by Nell-Lu from Edinburgh, Scotland United Kingdom on Thursday, February 1, 2007
I passed the scarf journal to ShuChan last night. I still haven't embroidered my name on the scarf (to be honest, I'm putting it off as sewing is one of my least favourite things) so ShuChan will give the scarf and journal back to me when she's finished, I'll add my name, and then send it off to beekeeper40.

ETA: I've now added my name to the scarf, which is still with ShuChan.

Journal Entry 11 by Nell-Lu from Edinburgh, Scotland United Kingdom on Tuesday, June 26, 2007
The Edinburgh leg of the scarf ray is finished! I have the scarf and journal and am about to package them up to send to beekeeper40. I'll post them as soon as I get confirmation of beekeeper40's address. I've taken another photo to show progress.

ETA: Drat! It looks as if I can't upload photo's any more (I've had problems with the site since that big server upgrade earlier in the year). Sorry. I've emailed the photo to ShuChan to see if she has better luck.

Journal Entry 12 by ShuChan from Edinburgh, Scotland United Kingdom on Wednesday, June 27, 2007
Hello
Such fun knitting my bit! I haven't knitted anything for a while and it inspired me to start some new projects. Thanks for coming up with the idea!

Mailed to the next knitter - Veganknitter.

Journal Entry 16 by veganknitter from Bolton, Greater Manchester United Kingdom on Saturday, August 4, 2007
Received last night - what a fantastic idea!

I am very impressed with the knitted contributions so far - some of you have really upped the ante and I am hopeful that my poor effort will stand up.

Journal Entry 17 by veganknitter from Bolton, Greater Manchester United Kingdom on Sunday, August 12, 2007
Spent all day completing my section; it may be more than 20 rows though as I didn't read the instructions onscreen before I started.

Most of the time was spent trying to embroider "veganknitter" onto the scarf; I only had room for "VEGAN" and and E and R. I made a little knitted square which I hope will do to represent "KNIT(T)".

I haven't been able to print photos in colour for the "real" journal but details can be seen on my blog here:

I really enjoyed taking part in this project; thanks!

Off to Minkymoo76 next.

Sending off to Kimmi

Journal Entry 21 by Kimmi from Kelowna, British Columbia Canada on Thursday, November 8, 2007
Woohoo! This was in my mailbox today and what great timing, I'm going to be in the area of the yarn shop tomorrow. Such terrific contributions so far! Being the only Canadian, I'll have to try to add a Canadian flair to the scarf. You'd think there would be several of us participating as we are the land of snow and ice and scarves are part of our daily apparel!!!

Terrific idea Lottiotta.

Journal Entry 22 by Kimmi from Kelowna, British Columbia Canada on Tuesday, November 13, 2007
How can this be anything but a 10? I had so much fun searching through the yarn shop and then finding a pattern on the internet that I'm hooked on knitting again! Yahoo! Such a great way to spend an afternoon.

I'll contact southernfryed and get this in the mail ASAP. Thanks again for letting me contribute.

Nov 20th - The scarf and journal are now on their way. Happy knitting!

Journal Entry 23 by wingSouthernfryedwing from Lexington, South Carolina USA on Monday, November 26, 2007
The Scarf and Journal arrived today. WOW! This is exciting! I read the journal already and will take a day or two to figure out what I want to do in my knitted part. Can't wait to get started!

Journal Entry 24 by wingSouthernfryedwing from Lexington, South Carolina USA on Thursday, December 6, 2007
I signed up for this scarf ring while reading Debbie Macomber's Blossom Street series(A Good Yarn). I have really enjoyed this project and I'm currently thinking about starting another knitting project.
The design on my 20 rows is suppose to be the shape of South Carolina.
I plan to package the scarf and journal up this afternoon and put it in the mail to BunnyLady in the morning.

Journal Entry 25 by BunnyLady from Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin USA on Wednesday, December 12, 2007
Arrived here safe and sound!!! WOOHOO. It looks awesome gals! I too read the Debbi Macomber series and had my Mom teach me to knit the baby blocks pattern in the book after reading it so I am by no means an experienced knitter but I will simply knit and perl away and add something to portray myself to my section.

Journal Entry 26 by BunnyLady from Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin USA on Tuesday, May 6, 2008
This is all packed up and ready to go. I am just waiting for the next participants address to send it.

I apologize for delaying this ring for so long and am thoroughly embarrassed about it. This scarf looks AWESOME and everyone should see it.

Ohmygosh, I can't believe how great this scarf looks! It arrived in my mailbox yesterday and now I've got to figure out what to add to it. I haven't even been knitting much lately - hopefully I'll get this turned around quickly.

Journal Entry 29 by Lottiotta from Aberdovey, Wales United Kingdom on Sunday, October 12, 2008
PMed knitwit to check on the scarf's status. Here's hoping it'll be moving again soon!

It's finally off to California!! Yeah!!

Sent Priority Mail today.

Journal Entry 31 by tomsmama from Anaheim, California USA on Thursday, November 20, 2008
Oh my stars! This has to be the coolest thing ever!! Lord but we are a talented bunch aren't we!

It obviously got here safe and sound and I intend to get my section done quickly to get it moving again. A bit of a side note, I belong to a group called 'Stitch N Chicks', who meet several times a month to knit, eat, eat, knit, you get the idea. Tonight is our meeting so I'm taking the whole package with me. I may have them all autograph a page in the diary.

Again, thanks so much for including me. Can't wait to see what it looks like when it's done and I think the auction idea is wonderful.

Journal Entry 32 by tomsmama from Anaheim, California USA on Thursday, December 4, 2008
Okie dokie, my section is done and I must say I enjoyed working on this project immensely. (Somehow the spelling doesn't look right on that word but oh well!)

Must confess that I did not however enjoy working with the contrast yarn I decided to use for the symbol (you'll see what it is when you get the scarf). One of those kind of wormy yarns that doesn't want to cooperate. So I hearby give permission for any further scarf recipients who notice a worming issue to tack, sew, glue, staple, whatever, to get the damn ends to stay in place!!

My knitting/crochet group "Stitch-n-Chicks" has decided to do this as a group project just trading our scraves back and forth between members. I'll post pics as I get them.

12/10/08 Mailed today priority mail to Sunshinedreamr.

Journal Entry 33 by Lottiotta from Aberdovey, Wales United Kingdom on Tuesday, December 16, 2008
I received a message from Tomsmama telling me "the USPS confirmed delivery of the scarf on the 13th." Yay!

Journal Entry 34 by sunshinedreamr on Wednesday, December 17, 2008
Thanks to tomsmama for sending the scarf along to me. It looks BEAUTIFUL! The day it arrived my mom and I just sat there admiring it. I can't wait to add my part. What a lovely idea, lottiotta. :)

Journal Entry 35 by Lottiotta from Aberdovey, Wales United Kingdom on Sunday, April 5, 2009
I just messaged Sunshinedreamr, to see where the scarf is at right now. :)

6th April 2009
Gosh! A very prompt reply, Sunshinedreamr has messaged me back to say she'll be getting it done in the next few days. :)

26th August 2009
Just sent another PM, I hope Sunshinedreamr can get this moving again!

Journal Entry 36 by sunshinedreamr on Friday, August 28, 2009
The scarf is safe! Don't worry!

I just recieved a PM from Lottiotta who started this beautiful scarf ring, but I figured everyone deserves an explanation as to why I still have the scarf so that is why I am journaling here.

I can apologize a thousand times over, but that still won't change the fact that I have kept it for so long. I hope you will all accept my deepest apology though. I have been dealing with a lot of stress over the past year and battling with depression. I know it is no excuse and I should have had this moving along months ago, and I am very sorry. I feel awful about it.

My part of the scarf is already knit, and I found the knitting to be theraputic in a way. I need to just somehow find a way to sew my name onto my part. I'll be PMing the next person in line for their address shortly.

Again, I apologize. I know how special this scarf is and how much love and care went into each stitch. I just wanted to let you all know the scarf is safe and I will have this moving along soon. :)

Journal Entry 37 by Lottiotta from Aberdovey, Wales United Kingdom on Tuesday, December 29, 2009
I've just PMed Sunshinedreamr about the scarfring, as she's had it for over a year now. I've asked her to pass the scarf on, even if she's not finished her section. I hope we get at least another journal entry. :/

Journal Entry 38 by Aberpeter at Kirkland, Washington USA on Saturday, April 9, 2011
Wow... it's been over a year since this has been journaled. The scarf arrived yesterday at my house. I will look through my yarn to decide what colors I will be adding and I'll try to move this on in a timely fashion.

EDIT:
Since I can upload only one pic per journal entry, I added a picture of the section I complete in this entry and the entire scarf in my next journal entry.

Journal Entry 39 by Aberpeter at Kirkland, Washington USA on Monday, May 30, 2011
I'm done with my section... I have included a picture of the scarf so far.

I will get this back in the mail within the next few days.

Released 12 yrs ago (6/4/2011 UTC) at Kirkland, Washington USA

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

The scarf is traveling across Puget Sound to spend some time with BigKat.

Journal Entry 41 by BigKat at Bremerton, Washington USA on Tuesday, June 7, 2011
Arrived safely today and I very much enjoyed reading the journal. I feel a bit intimidated by the expertise and creativity shown so far as I'm not a very expert knitter and it's been quite awhile since I held a pair of needles. My knitting these days is done on rounds. My plan at the moment is to knit my section on a round and sew it to the scarf. Would there be any objection if I sewed it to the beginning? That way it could also be a pocket. I recently inherited half of my late grandmother's yarn stash. She was an avid knitter for over 90 years (she learned when she was five and passed away at 97). I'll be using some of her yarn in the project. Fair warning, it will be next week before I can get started as my daughter's High School Graduation is this weekend and much time is being devoted to last minute getting everything signed off, etc.

Journal Entry 42 by BigKat at Bremerton, Washington USA on Thursday, July 7, 2011
Finally managed to find a box into which the newly lengthened scarf would fit and to get to the post office to mail it. Since the Post Office most convenient to my house is closing getting things mailed has become much more challenging.

I enjoyed adding to the scarf. My section is a bit different in that it forms a pocket. My grandmother passed away last November (2010) and I inherited half of her yarn stash. She was an avid knitter, loved to crochet and did lots of crafting. In going through her stash I found the remaining yarn from a sweater she had knit for me. I used that for my piece of the scarf. Before shipping it off I took lots of photos. They can be found here http://www.flickr.com/photos/33350160@N02/sets/72157626968292253/ I still have a couple of photos to add but that will happen soon.

Journal Entry 43 by smajd86 at Tukwila, Washington USA on Sunday, March 11, 2012
The book and scarf are here in Tukwila and have been for some time. Mea culpa. Off to the yarn shop ASAP. - Sharon

Journal Entry 44 by Lottiotta at Swansea, Wales United Kingdom on Thursday, September 13, 2012
I had a message from smajd86 back in April that said this:

"I just sent the package off to fly46 in Tennessee. She's the first person I heard from. I hope it moves a little more quickly now. Mea culpa."

So I guess it's still on the move...?
