Journal Entry 1 by lovemylife from Campbellsport, Wisconsin USA on Saturday, August 12, 2006
At the height of Mao's industrial revolution, two boys are exiled to the countryside for "re-education. The narrator and his friend, guilty of being the sons of doctors, find themselves in a remote village where they are made to cart buckets of excretement up and down winding paths. Their only distraction is a violin, but then they find a hidden stash of western classics in Chinese translation, and it's then that their re-education takes a surprising turn.

What a lovely little book! Perfect in length, and the writing was beautiful. I was pulled into the story very quickly, and enjoyed it tremendously all the way through. A great little fable that I look forward to sharing :)
