The Back of the Book

The Amish people of Pennsylvania have turned their back on the modern world. For religious reasons, they still live the life of America's first Puritan settlers, farming their land in the same dress as three centuries ago and having no truck with violence or modern inventions such as the motor car. Their intriguing way of life was the background to the film hit, Witness, starring Harrison Ford.

Into this close knit and wary community comes an outsider - a new midwife. Penny Armstrong was trained in Scotland in a bleak midwifery school before going to Philadelphia to deliver babies to unmarried mothers. Here she became embroiled in rows about methods of chilbirth.

Now, within her own practice amongst the Amish, she is able to make her own decisions over what is best for a mother. In this charming and gracefully written book we share her fascinating experiences amongst them. The mother-to-be she is summoned to help could be:

* A nineteen-year-old first-time mother. Brimming over with excitement, she has no idea that she's at least a day away from delivery.

* A mother whose eight other children were whisked away to grandmother's house earlier.

* One of the energetic ones. She's in the kitchen washing the floor when Penny arrives, because she's already baked six pies, and there is nothing else to do.

Penny has come to care deeply for the strong, intriguing Amish people who are the core of her practice.
