6 journalers for this copy...
Downright scary what boys can do. I remember studying this one in school but I never saw the sexual content that Epstein sees. Maybe that was kept from us in the late 60s. At one time I didn''t believe Golding. I didn't think that people would revert to savages so quickly. Now when I hear on the news all that young people do with guns, knives, drugs and torture. I am not so sure that Golding wasn't right after all.

Huge thanks to bookscout for finding this & sending to me, along with the others. The parcel arrived last week & I'd forgotten all about it, so it was a wonderful surprise.

I was kind of forced into a re-read of this because Spike1972 was busy with a copy and kept talking to me about it so I had to remind myself of some of the details in order to discuss it cogently. Powerful enough to continue to stay with me, so I think I shall make this copy available for travelling and find another the next time I want to read it. Thank you once more book-scout for the parcel you sent me so long ago!

Arrived this morning along with another bookray. It has arrived just in time to keep me out of mischief while the electricians are busy rewiring my house this week!
Many thanks for this, I can't wait to start reading it.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I suppose I should be appaulled at the behaviour of the boys, but given the situation, their behaviour seems to me to be a logical outcome. If the boys had been supported by adults in this story, I would have found the rapid decline into a savage existence far less believable. I found the irony of the 'smoke' at the end of the story particularly appealing.
I believe Golding had a good idea where he was going when he wrote this book. When I first started reading, I wondered why he chose to have all male characters. Perhaps it was merely the era in which the book was written that gave voice to that decision, or perhaps he made a more conscious choice that had nothing to do with the times. Either way, had female characters been present in the story, I feel that the savagery would have had to be far more violent to make the story believable.

posted out to ArabellaFigg today.
Book arrived this morning, thankyou Chunniemonster. Will start reading this as soon as I've finished my current read.
Even though I found the boys behaviour very disturbing, it was believable. Very scary, but a very good book.

Received two books in the mail today! This one is third in line for me to read - but I read fast!
I can't believe I am going to say this about a 1001 book, but I thought the book was too short. I didn't buy it that the island life spiraled down so quickly...it seemed like it was just a matter of hours/days before they turned on each other...
It reminded me a lot of Lost - especially with the plane crash and the beastie they were describing at the beginning. I went on line and it actually sounds like the original concept of lost was based on lord of the flies and other adventure tales.
I have already pm'd the next person. When I get the address I will drop this book in the mail.
Thanks for hosting this ray, CaterinaAnna, everyone I mentioned this book to was surprised I did not have to read it in school. Ironically enough this included someone that I went to school with...guess we took different literature classes.
4/7/08 - Mailed out today during lunch. Had to wait in line at the post office for 45 minutes! All of the crazies mailing in their tax returns (guess I better get on that!) Decided that this is my last post office run until after the 15th! Things will slow down then...
This book should be in Singapore in 5-10 days...

Yaay I found the book this morning! Thanks everyone! I think I'll start real soon. I've been waiting to read it for ages!

I'm sorry, I passed the book on to a colleague and he's keeping it, so I can't pass it to the 1001 library. Hope it's not a big problem, since the book is traveling anyway. Hopefully he or someone will get a chance to read and journal it.
