9 out of 10

This book grabbed me and pulled me in. Rather than give it away, here is a description from the back: "Hailed for its coiled eroticism and the moral claims it makes upon the reader, this mesmerizing novel is a story of love and secrets, horror and compassion, unfolding against the haunted landscape of postwar Germany. When he falls ill on his way home from school, fifteen-year-old Michael Berg is rescued by Hanna, a woman twice his age. In time she becomes his lover. She enthralls him with her passion, but puzzles him with her odd silences. Then she inexplicably disappears. When Michael next sees her, he is a young law student and Hanna is on trial for a hideous crime. But as he watches her refuse to defend herself, Michael gradually realizes that his former lover may be guarding a secret she considers more shameful than murder."

I'm sending this book off to moogytee in a trade for Ballet Shoes: http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/472623
I'll drop it in the mail next time I go to the post office.

I got this book yesterday in the mail with The Stone Diaries. What a nice surprise! I thought you forgot about the books, because a few months had passed since the last time we exchanged emails (well, I almost forgot myself). Thanks moogytee!

8 out of 10

I finally got to read it, and just finished!

I found the translation a bit awkward at times. Luckily the book is pretty short and straightforward. Any longer would be too long. All in all, I like the book. It’s different, it’s sad, and it has profound characters, though I thought the ending was a bit of a cop-out and felt myself wanting more.

Thank you very much for the book!
It's been on a long journey but arrived safely in the UK.
I've read the book in the original, but MR turnpages would like to read it, too and he doesn't do German. So this is fantastic for him...
THANK YOU!
